  • BES860 shutting off and making rattling sound (videos included) - UPDATED: Fixed!

    Hi everyone,

I have just received a BES860 that is in need of repair.

    Things I did so far:
    - multiple citric acid flushes, until only water was coming out
    - a few cleaning cycles with sodium percarbonate (most did not complete, but it did at least a few rounds)

The transparent flexible pipes look clean, now, and there is no debris in the water that is flushed out.

The symptoms are multiple, depending on planet alignment:
    - the machine turns off at random times, for instance while pulling a shot or doing the cleaning cycle
    - makes a loud rattling noise either while pulling a shot or after, as if the solenoid valve kept going from open to close. When this noise happens I can

If I keep turning the machine on, it eventually manages to pull a shot.

Yesterday evening it seemed like it was working more or less fine, as in it could pull shots, even though it could not get through a whole cleaning cycle without turning off multiple times.
This morning, it took about half an hour before I could pull a shot, as it kept making that rattling sound and couldn't build the pressure or shut down.

    Symptoms:
    - rattling noise (less frequent) https://youtube.com/shorts/bHiNNa77rGQ
    - successful single cleaning round https://youtube.com/shorts/cUbCR37zTJ0
    - shut-down during cleaning cycle https://youtube.com/shorts/AaC7SjlRVlk
    - internals: successful cleaning round https://youtube.com/shorts/vM1vU1Bg6hc
    - internals: shutdown (2nd half of the video) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkzOpf46Jk8

My guess is the PCB might be sending the wrong signals to the solenoid.
When the rattling noise happens, I see the pipe going into the thermocoil vibrates, then stops vibrating, then vibrates again, as if the water influx was intermittent.
It seems like the PCB might be frantically opening/closing the solenoid.
That said, it's my first experience with coffee machines so I might not be making any sense

I haven't accessed the PCB yet, but I plan to do so, soon.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what I could try next?

    Fixed! 😍

It turns out the random shutdowns and rattling noise were caused by a faulty flow meter!

I replaced it with a 974-9541-A for 10£ and things work perfectly, now! 🤠
It's not exactly the same flow meter that was installed on the machine (it came with the 974-9501-B), the bottom pin doesn't fit inside the hole on the metal plate so it's not fixed to the plate, but it has the same specs and I verified the output volume is correct

At that point I found out it was under-extracting even at the finest grinder setting, so I manually tweaked the internal burr (BES860 doesn't have the internal burr adjustment)

Now using a single wall filter and the pressure is at about 12:30 on the dial
Still some tuning to do, but this is great!

note: the steam wand seems to work just fine, I let it go for 5 minutes (when the safety mechanism turned it off) without issues

I tried replacing both the solenoid coils, no improvement, the machine still fails to complete a cleaning cycle and shuts down at random while doing the cleaning cycle or pulling a shot

Hello, it seems you have a nasty machine to start with but also one that is so old it is starting to act up, not only thru the solenoids but also thru the PCB, have a read in my thread:
          https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equ...-shutting-down

I’m not done fixing mine but it’s having similar problems.

Thanks Kerim! Indeed, I saw your thread and was keeping an eye on it to see if you manage to get the grinder to work

Today I disconnected the pipe that goes out of the pump to check whether the pump was faulty.

When I turn the machine on, the pump gives a first steady push to fill in the thermocoil and the pressure seems to be good enough.

After I press on the button to pull a shot, the pump starts frantically turning on and off like the solenoid.

Not sure whether the machine is deactivating the pump when the solenoid doesn't do what it is supposed to, or maybe there's a bigger problem with power delivery while pulling a shot 🤷‍♂️

Maybe you have a tired and faulty pump even though you get steam for 5 consecutive minutes...? I could be off my mark here but have a look at this vid, do you think it would be acting the same way as he describes?

@Mods: would you mind updating the title with a "[FIXED]" prefix?
