  • Massive news for Breville BES920, 980 and 990 models as of mid 2022

There has been a huge change that has taken place in the construction of Breville's Dual Boiler machines as of mid 2022, the models involved are the BES920, BES980 and BES990.

As many people who own one of these machines probably know, and those that don't have no doubt read about it, they have been plagued by leaking o-rings on the steam boiler which can cause a variety of problems and is the leading cause of breakdowns, usually within only a few years.

Around 3 years ago, Breville replaced the heat exchanger tube fittings on the steam boiler with leak free compression fittings as these were usually the main failures. This was good, however, there still remained many o-rings on the other tubes which eventually leaked.

As of mid 2022, Breville have completely changed both the coffee and steam boilers and all of their sensors and tubes to be compression fittings (photo attached of a BES980).
What this means is that there is no longer any o-rings on either of the boilers to leak. This is going to dramatically increase their reliability. The earliest machine I currently know of to have the new boilers is date code 2228 (28th week of 2022) and Breville said they change was fully implemented as of late 2022. (To find your date code, read the serial number and the first four numbers you come across after the "A1BAAESA" or similar string is the year/week).

The centre of the steam probes does still seem to be an o-ring though, these have been failing a lot recently. I'm not sure if this is a new design as well or if it's the same, I would assume this has been changed to improve reliability if they've gone to such effort for the rest.

I suspect Breville will have to increase the retail price on their machines to recoup some of the millions they will have spent on this change so don't be surprised if you see this in the coming months. It's well worth it though.

    Thanks for the heads up

How do you ensure that you are getting one of the new ones
if you are buying over the new few weeks?

The box should have the serial number on it along with the model/power rating info I think, I'll check tomorrow. If it's after 2228 you should be getting the new version but the later the better, just to be sure.

    Thanks
Just need confirmation if possible that the serial number does appear on the box itself

noidle22 , Your Massive News is not currently able to be substantiated by any Breville representatives.

Therefore I consider this information to be a Massive Leak. ( firmly in the zone)

      Seriously Now.

This is a very good thing. Are these compression fittings the ones with the R clips.?

These new fittings use a variety of different teflon seals, there's no more o-rings or metal clips.
The only fittings in the machine anymore that use the metal clip/o-ring design are on the pumps and steam/hot water valves.

Sorry wasn't able to check yesterday, have just done now. On the top of the box is a barcode with the serial number sticker under it, pictured is the box from a BES980.

I currently have the new 920 I bought just before Xmas at the repairer due to overheating, water in LCD and pressure valves so of course it isn't a new one, in fact it was over 12 months old in the box. 2134 date code. I'm contemplating selling it once fixed. This is good information. Thanks

You should’ve requested a replacement not a repair given how recent the sale was

It turns out, I'm losing my mind.
I bought this one in December 2021. I bought one in December 2022 for my brother and got the purchases mixed up in my head.

                Isn't the warranty 2 years?

Yeah, it's in getting repaired under warranty. A warranty repair and work order was approved by Breville over the phone within seconds of me explaining the issue. When I got to the local approved repairer 30 minutes later, a customer walked in behind me with a bes920 with exactly the same symptoms. Overheating, steam and water in teh gauge and lcd.

I've just fininshed repairing my old BDB so I'm not too worried about the time it takes for the other to come back to me now.

This is all very tasty news to me as it’s looking like I’m in the market for BES920…

You just missed an opportunity to buy one for $849 from JB. Sign up for the JB HiFi Perks or monitor Ozbargain.

Can anyone who has bought online recently, say from appliances online, that they’ve received the new version?

I would have thought they were well and truly out there by now.

Asking as there’s not really any store stock near me.

              Cheers, Grant.

I bought a BES920 from the Good Guys a week ago.
The serial number on a sticker in the water tank compartment says "..2237.." so I assume this is a recent(ish) model with the new fittings (fingers crossed).
If I open the case how can you tell which type of fittings they are?

                Steve

It's a new one. The earliest I've seen as I mentioned in the first post is a 2228 which is 9 weeks older than yours.

Certainly great news! I just recently had to refresh my o-rings so was a little bit confused as to why only a couple of the ports had compression fittings. But I guess cost does make sense. If these parts ever get out into the wild, I'd be interested in retrofitting the boilers in my machine so they'll actually stay properly sealed!
