So, I've had this machine for a few years now and, lately, it's developing some issues.
It still gets warm when not in operation. Rightly or wrongly, this doesn't seem fatal - I just turn it off.
More recently, the portafilter started to rotate to the 4pm position again. I replaced the seal (as I have successfully done before) but it still rotated to about 5pm. So I added a shim then another and it seemed to work - the portafilter locked at the 6pm position. But it soon started moving past 6pm and I wasn't forcing the handle. This was only a couple of weeks after replacing the seal.
So, I replaced the seal again (in case the old one was bodgy) and even added 2 shims. It didn't seem to work. Now, it leaks around the group head - water and some coffee grounds spurt out around the head even with the handle seemingly firmly locked in place. It seems to start ok, making all the "normal" noises. But then, just as it is where it should start to pour, there is a very slight "popping" noise, it starts to leak, and the pressure needle wobbles wildly around in the light brown (low pressure) zone.
Should I go the whole hog and add a third shim (I've been hesitant to do so)? Or are the symptoms I describe indicative of a more serious problem and I should consider a new machine? (I have recently turned 60 so it could be a late present to myself!)
