My VBM Piccolo has started retaining a little pressure after brewing a shot and not fully purging once the lever is down. I've backflushed it with cleaner but this hasn't helped. However, the valve is not dripping at all. Does this mean I need to buy a kit to service the entire E61 grouphead?

To answer your Q = Yes and No.
State the obvious the Brew Chamber is witholding pressure upon you 'releasing' the super lever.
Valve / Seals Sticking - possibly. Easy to dis-assemble, check, lube etc.
Check the lower exhaust valve as first port of call.
Possibly wear to the cam / valve rod (some like Rocket, VBM ?, have a threaded pushrod as a replaceable component) as part of the valve / pushrod assy. These or the Cam face may be worn therefore not delivering the 'full stroke' of the valve and therefore 'releasing' brew group pressure.
