6910 group seal

  • 6910 group seal

    My 5 month old 6910 developed a small tear in the group seal, enough to spit hot water out of the group head when pulling a shot.

    Sunbeam were not interested in replacing it under warranty so I purchased a new one from the authorised service agent. They supplied the familiar blue seal but the package also contained 2 translucent, thin rubber rings that fit perfectly over the blue seal where it sits against the body of the machine.

    Are these spacers that can be used when the seal or collar wears? I installed one and it made it too tight for the porta filter. All ok without it though.

    Sunbeam sent me one with my first machine... and yes it helped to set the group handle back as the seal got old.

    I have had close workings with 5 EM6910 units to date and the only time I have seen a split / nick has been where it was installed incorrectly after a service... ( ME). However that is not to say that a fault can not occur, causing the seal to split... but I feel that it would be rare.

    My work mate has a habbet of leaving his group engauged and almost to the full lock and I know that after a service, his seal is well compressed... I leave mine out or just engauged but with little or no preasure on the seal.

    Other on CS have made their own..

    NOTE: My gut feel is that if you had to use TWO then that would be a sign that the seal is too old and no longer flexible or that there is some wear in the main housing and that it is to take up any looseness...

      AM Im up to the 3rd seal on the 6910 in 9 months of use.
      I cant remember exactly the problem of the original one but the first replacement developed a crack around where its stepped and the next one lost a good chunk, about 0.5cm triangular piece, right where the basket meets the seal.

      I know the collar is worn so bought a new seal plus a silicon spacer the other day and its working fine again.

      If the collar wears any further, which it will, I will get the collar replaced before the warranty expires.

        Interesting..... I am expecting that my collar will get worse over time... The thing is there does not appear to be any real stats as to the life expectancy..

        The other point that I keep hearing is the up dosing and how much pressure is put on when locking the system...

        Having looked at the GroupHead and the collar on two systems here, it appears like some stretching?? is taking place and or screws are not holding as well as they should... Without further evidence it is hard to guess, but I am thinking that may be the 6910 revised Collar and bolts etc may yet prove to be as substantial as required ?

          TG when it comes time for you to approach Sunbeam to replace the collar I would be interested to know if they do it under warranty without any quibles. Seems like a number of us will be treading your path.

            My situation is even more tenuous in that its a replacement from Sunbeam for the previous 6900.

            When the time comes Im not going to mention who it was a gift from.

              I can tell you now that the collars are not available in big numbers... My latest EM6910 has lost all its plating ( Well at least a thin coat that was over the top of a base coat) on the collar. On contacting Sunbeam and the agent, I was advised that they did not have any spares in stock at present... Thus, until spares are in, I am not putting mine in for repair...

              However I doubt that the whole problem is due to any ware on the collar or it would also be viable on the group head... I still believe that it something a little more around the design / manufacturing process...

                When I telephoned the agent last week to check on seal availability he agreed with me thats its probably a worn collar, so it would seem to be a known and common problem.

                  When I had my machine in to have the worn collar replaced under warranty, it took seven weeks, and they charged me for a new seal that they said needed replacing.

                      Just came across this thread, and thought Id let you know I had to to have the collar replaced on my 3800 under warranty. Took about 5 weeks. I bought a Krups basket there too, but should have bought a Krups seal while I was there, as Im still getting some blow by.
