i like naked handles for working on my technique, and like using it for milk drinks as crema is usually more bubbly (for want of a better word), so helps in framing the crema around the milk but some ppl arent such a fan of the naked handle for short blacks for instance.

anyway, if youre considering it and youre in melbourne, i can get you to someone wholl chop your handle for about 10 bucks, no joke and did a great job on my bro in laws.

In essence they are a normal portafilter with the bottom cut out, they are an excellent training tool as you can see how your technique effects the extraction out of different areas of the puck. I got one last year and it is amazing how little changes in technique can improve your extraction.

A more detailed discussion of the pros and cons can be found by searching and reading on this site

    Hi again
Can someone please explain naked portafilters? What are the advantages (or disadvantages) is this something new?

    Robert
Been around for a long time... The name has become more popular..

As you can see more of the process, it can assist with understanding the outcomes and effects the grind and tamp can have..

ie. The pour may only come from one area, thus indicating a channel has been formed and allowing the water to track...

Cause... A number of things... Clumping, Tanp, grind etc etc etc... It is then through making changes and having that instant and direct feedback that you can and do get, a better feel for what is going on.

There is lots written on Naked / Exposed PF and on what any number of results might be suggesting. U Tube has many examples.. Good and Bad.
