I just got back from a trip over easter weekend in mums onsite van and took a plastic pourover combined with my sunbeam em0480 grinder and it worked a treat.
Handgrinder and Aeropress with freshly roasted beans - best coffee in Tazzie

Hi Des
* Carefully drill out the bottom of the (double) filter basket (about 8mm bit) to make it non-presurised. Done carefully this leaves the whole filter intact.
Simon
Thanks Simon.
I will check one out if I can find one in town to look at tomorrow for weight and also how many holes to drill out.
Good tip there. Didnt think about drilling a basket.
Im quite happy with my bottom of the range Breville Cafe Roma (about $149 or less on eBay atm) with the following caveats of course:
* I hand grind beans for every cup as required
* Carefully drill out the bottom of the (double) filter basket (about 8mm bit) to make it non-presurised. Done carefully this leaves the whole filter intact.
This machine actually makes very good espresso and textures milk fine. The only reason Im looking for an upgrade is throughput!
The only place they appear is in the US so do a worldwide search.
I am also playing with an electric Stainless Steel one out of Taiwan at present but it needs modding out of the box to work well (review coming in a week or two when tweaked). You could also look at the Bodum Santos electric which is plastic I believe?

Baby Gaggia and Ascaso/Ibiteral or Nemox Lelit Combi might make sense from a machine point of view. Remembering that if you pull up for a meal you wont have power.
Personally I have a metal Syphon and Hand Grinder and I have just secured a second hand Atomic off ferralbay as well to play with. Maybe a Bellman Stovetop from Sorrentina or one of his replica Atomics?
Thanks Beanflying, Good advice thanks.
A metal Syphon makes sense in a van. Have searched the net for one but found nothing relevant. Do you know where one would be available?
As far as machines go the Nemox Lelit Combi is of interest along with coffeemums suggestion. Big difference I know but checking all options.

At the cheap end, have a look at the Sunbeam Ristretto (EM2800?) and an unpressurised basket. It has just over 1/2 the footprint of Silvia, has a boiler, steams well but slow, but if youre on holiday whats the rush
It was my first machine and I was getting better coffee out of it than most cafes, even with (pre snob days [smiley=embarassed.gif]) supermarket brick coffee and its standard pressurised basket.
Thanks coffee mum, I have looked at the Sunbeam EM 2300 Ristretto on the net and it might fit the bill for this year at that price. If it doesnt work so well it is not much to lose. The small footprint is the biggest thing I can see that interests me. Hard to get a look at variety of machines physically living in regional Vic.
By the way do you know where I could get an unpressurised basket?

Phew. A bit to answer there. Will try and clarify. Confined space being inside the caravan. Storage in cupboard and bench space. A Sylvia would be great and affordable but far too large to manage. I will investigate the other welcome suggestions. Not worried about no power as gas stove-top espresso pot etc.and plunger we have cover that for short stops. Longer staying with power is what I want a better unit for. Have an Emide burr grinder which is a suitable size.
My answers are all over the shop. Sorry
Further to add following on from beanflying
I have a breville electric equivalent of a stove pot that makes more than acceptable coffee for when i am on holiday.
I find that this coffee is a pleasant change to the short / long blacks / milk based coffee i generally have at home.

I think you need to define the "confined space"
is it a cupboard or specific bench area you are trying to cater for or just the fact that its in a caravan?
I took an Aeropress with me when I went to Singapore and everyone I made coffee for were more than happy but I was just adding plain milk rather than textured milk.
If you need to steam and have access to 240v power, then go a Brevilla Cafe Roma or similar. If you only have gas or camp stove try the La Sorrentina Atomic
would probably be good to get an idea of your budget? One of the sponsors is selling their discontinued silvias for $700 which would be good, but if your budget is more like an aeropress and a straw to blow into then that might not work...
