Re: Help find lube for coffee machine

I suggest a Dow Corning product called "molykote 111" valve & o-ring lubricant.  Many industrial o-ring supply outlets will have or be able to source the product.  Expensive at about $50 per tube.

Service Temperature [C] -40 to +200, food grade

    Cheers

Re: Help find lube for coffee machine

As promised, this is my lube search report...

Kitchen supply stores, whether for pros or consumers, are hopeless. A friend suggested bakery supply stores, but have not tried any.

The service guy of Coffex in Brunswick (VIC) is knowledgeable and quite helpful, but couldnt locate their lube supplier.

Coffee Mio at Thornbury (VIC) was not able to help, Saeco (VIC) is not interested in my problem.

I finally found what I want from Europespresso in Annandale, Sydney, thanks chopinhauer for the tip. I got a package containing the gaskets and seals I needed, and two kinds of lube, one for the gaskets and the other for the seals. Friendly, knowledgeable and quick, this is a shop I would recommend if your Pavoni or Gaggia needs parts or services.

Lastly, when you ask for food-grade lube, try to keep a straight face, else some people may have other ideas...

Oh, took the machine apart this morning, cleaned everying and replaced all seals and gaskets around the piston areas, and it is like new again. No leak so far, keeping my fingers crossed.

    OK,

I only used my Factory for a few months, and it then became a display item.....great machine, but cant supply a bunch of drinks the way Miss Silvia can!

    The Factory/Pavoni are beautiful machines

    Cheers...

    Hi Stratford,

My Factory is more than a yr old, water dropplets appear from top of piston when warming up, time to replace the seals around the piston...supposed to have done it every year, but am just too lazy...

The gaggia factory is a similar (or indeed, identical) machine to the pavoni, so I suggest you give europespresso in Annandale, Sydney, a ring to ask them what lube they use when they service Pavonis. (They are the official Pavoni agents). Ive seen them grease up my Pavoni lever machine and gaskets so I know they keep the lube / grease on their premises.

Slow, have a look in the white pages for a company called BSC Motion Technology. They are Dow Corning stockists and have branches nationwide. They will be able to source whatever you require - they may even be able to offer you an alternative product at a cheaper price.

Thanks all for your help, the search is on, will report back when I find something.

A guy at Coffex told me about the Corning lube they were using, he was saying something like A$75 for a 100g tube, and he wasnt sure where to buy them.

Rice, AQIS and lubricant??? the mind boggles, cavity searches!
bwahaha ;D I didnt put two and two together when I posted, but I can see the confusion.
Lube + Aussie Quarantine = cavity searches

Jokes apary, Ive found that when it comes to things food related, AQIS can be most knowledgeable. Probably the most comparbale thing we have to the US based FDA or NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) which is involved in food safety.

If you can wait till Im back in Aus in a few weeks, I can check up on the Dow Corning product. We deal with them (but in a different field, not lubes).

Not to mention Kopi Luwak! ;D

I wonder, can you charge more for it having undergone a double passage? : ;D

As to the food grade lubricant, is the application such that any of many and varied cooking oils would work?

theres a dow corning silicon product, cant recall the exact details but its food safe and rated to over 200deg C. I think I got it from a bearings type shop but the info was pulled off the dow corning  web site. Im away for another week so I cant look at the tube to tell you the details, it wasnt very expensive.

Contact AQIS (Aust Quarantine & Inspection Service), they might be able to put you on to a supplier.
