Im very surprised you get crema from a mocha pot. Theyve been in use in my family for generations and NEVER ---never---has any espresso been produced with crema.
Yeah, it knocked my socks off with surprise, too. Of course theres not as much - nor is it as thick - as with a machine but it was enough for decent latte art. The rich crema only seemed to come from freshly roasted Ethiopian or Yemen mocha. The other varieties Ive tried have given the usual unspectacular mocha-pot result. I know which beans Ill be packing for the mocha pot next time I go on holiday!

    Cheers,

    Rob

Weve used everything from a one-cupper to an 8-cup, both in stainless steel and aluminium.

The reason being, is that coffee ideally should be brewed with water around 95 degrees.

For the water to rise from the bottom of the pot, through the grounds, and into the top, it will first have to boil. Already, were talking 100 degrees.

Being under pressure from the grounds, that temperature goes up even further. (The pressure can be so great that on occasions the steam valve opens to release the excess)

Result: a pitch-black brew, with no sigh of crema. A burned taste, which, while acceptable, does not compare with the subtelty of machine espresso.

    Robusto

I dont know where to go with this now.....
how did you let him leave with the Atomic..!?!!?!????
    shame   :P
Well, I was using the La Pavoni then, and he said he needed something to make coffee with.  Back then, (74) I dont think anyone thought all that much about the Atomics, except that they made good coffee, so I thought, fair enough.

My son tells me that later on he had a plumbed in machine, in fact, he had a bar with the coffee machine as part of it.  (he could afford it, having saved all that money not paying me a cent child support   > [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=grin.gif])

Ok. Back to the original topic. The Moka pot ecstasy I experienced last week was almost definitely due to the variety of beans, I reckon (50% Yemen Mocha Ismaili, 50% Peru Kontiki). Ive just put sanother blend through it (no hint of Yemen) and it was typical moka pot. I guess those yemen mocha beans have been cultivated for centuries for simple brewing on an open fire, so I shouldnt be that surprised.

    Cheers,

    Rob

I heard they were cheaper (and not as good)  Didnt realise there was a waiting list.  Just looked, they dont have a website nor an email address.  I will have to phone them.  Maybe time to visit some friends in Sydney?
Not surprised they dont have websites and the like... the shop is straight from the 50s and hasnt been touched since ;D
an old couple own it and from memory.. they bought the rights for the atomic from brevatti" or whoever it was... i believe they use the same mould and press as the original, but material quality may have changed.

I do remember that I had to scrape the rubber seal off. I do know that I shook and shook, and even though I have put water through it dozens of times (even tried with coffee a few times, to slow down the process, I never got a clear liquid coming out of it.
I guess some Atomics may be beyond redemption. The last time I asked Bon Trading about their new machines they said the price would be around $375 - $400.

    Judy,

The moka pot I now have is a GAT brand. Mines a 6-cup and was bought from Harris Scarf - theyre 1/2 price at $30 in their current sale (but not listed in their online sale catalogue). At least it was in Hobart. I think its the model shown here:

    www.gatspa.it/english/pratika.html

Using the same grind as for Silvia the coffee comes out thick and velvety.

As for the Atomic, I find much of the calcification pours out after a good shake with water in the machine. Citric acid would probably work well as a de-scaler too. The calcification in the top is trickier: it requires removing the shower screen, but the two screws holding it in place are notorious for rusting and breaking off when people try this. Gently but solidly tapping the side of the head with an open palm will knock some of the calcium out through the shower screen.

    Rob
Thanks for that - wish I had known last week - been to Harris Scarf, thats where I bought the glass frother!  Anyway, will have a look.

I think my fathers Atomic was beyond help.  I doubt that sitting in a cupboard for 25 years helped it.  That site also said that one should never leave the black knob on, this was on for 25 years!    I think I also had the shower screen off.  I do remember that I had to scrape the rubber seal off.  I do know that I shook and shook, and even though I have put water through it dozens of times (even tried with coffee a few times, to slow down the process, I never got a clear liquid coming out of it.

Ah yes, but an expensive one! I paid less for my Silvia brand new than the price Ive seen one or two Atomics sell for on Ebay. Bon Trading in Sydney has been the official Australian distributer for many years - I visited there once for spare parts - but I get the impression their waiting list is very long (I put my name down in 2003 and Im still waiting . . . )
I wasnt thinking of getting him an "original" one, I know that those are worth a fortune - I got quite a bit for mine as well, I was thinking of buying a new one. I heard they were cheaper (and not as good) Didnt realise there was a waiting list. Just looked, they dont have a website nor an email address. I will have to phone them. Maybe time to visit some friends in Sydney? ;D Mind you, Id only want to wait 2 months, not years Anyway, be interesting to find out how much a new one is?

I have seen a Place in Sydney that sell Atomics, Coffeecrew  has a article on them

Grrrrr.  My Googling abilities arent very good!    I spent ages at the time Googling for a cure, found nothing. Now, here it is:

If you have a Bon labeled Atomic, its not that old. To clean out your ATOMIC, get some citric acid at a health food store.

Put 1 tablespoonful in the machine and top it off with cold water. Install the empty coffee holder with the jug underneath and put on medium low heat.

Wait till all the water exhausts in the jug. Simple. Let your beloved Atomic cool off, unscrew filler knob , half fill with clean water and shake it up like if you were really mad, in other words shake the living hell out of it. Calmly, unscrew knob and empty....surprised?
    It does work.

    Repeat until tired.

I tried  EVERYTHING, including CLR (and the very expensive "proper" Espresso descaler) and shook it until my arms fell off, for weeks on end, nothing worked.  In the end, if anything it got worse, you could smell all the chemicals I used, regardless of how many times I put water through it.  About the only thing I didnt try was citric acid.  I then spent equally as long trying to make the outside shiny, once I decided to sell it

However all this discussion about Atomics made me decide to look into the new version.  That would be a good present for my son!
