  • Home brewing equipment - advice needed - height restriction for equipment.

    Hi all,

As my nick suggests Im a wanna b coffe snob.  So please help me out with some advice on some home brewing equipment.

I guess Im keen to make the best coffee I can at home.  My only real restraint is the equipment required must be able to live in a shelf on my kitchen bench that is 38cm 32.5cm high.  I would drag any equipment out of the shelf for brewing and then return to the shelf for storage.

From my limited research I havent been able to find an expresso machine that is this small.  Hence, should I only be considering stove tops?

    Thanks

    Hi Wanna b and welcome.

The Rancilio Silvia and Rancilio Rocky scrape in at 35cm and 36cm respectively. How strong is your shelf? :

Thanks Charlie, Ill check them out.  The shelf is actually the bench (so its plenty sturdy).  Ideally Id be wheeling/\/dragging the unit out for brewing.  I dont have much bench space so dont really want any equipment staying on the bench.

The new VBM Junior is listed as 35 cm tall, you may be able to remove the legs and put some type of shortened arrangement in their place. I will measure mine tonight and post. I wouldnt like to be pulling it in and out too often though as its 18 kg dry.......

Bugger! Ive just remeasured my bench/\/cupboard space. Its actually only 32.5cm high... Looks like the Silvia is out... Any other suggestions or am I back to having to think about stove tops?

            Thanks

Sorry wannabe, Ive bombed out from this end also. They advertise it at 35cm tall, from bench to top of the handles it is 40.5 cms........not even close to 35 :-[

Im sure you can find a decent grinder that will fit in the space.
Some of them have easily removable bean hoppers (or can be modified as such) that would dramatically reduce storage height.  Not sure if Sunbeam EMO 450/480 are even that tall as they come?

As far as brewing goes there are many options that can produce great coffee.
The good old plunger can still make a great brew,
Syphon or vacuum brewers seem to be getting more popular,
Aeropress is very popular, also Presso,
                Various stove top units are still popular, and there are some good tips around to help you get the best from them, two basic types;
the brew coffee only type (many many available), and the brew and steam milk type such as Belman and similar.

So for a brewing n00b like me.  Whats the best given my space issues?

                  Thanks

Not really sure anyone can give you an answer to that. The problem will come down to personal preference, and the fact that the different methods make very different types of coffee - you cant really compare syphon to plunger to stovetop in any meaningful way. Sure you might prefer one style over the others, but that wont make it best.
That said, you could probably get a plunger, syphon, aeropress and a stove top for around 1/2 the price of a Silvia - why not get all of them and decide for yourself

Fair enough.  In terms of my coffee tastes, I prefer a good expresso or macchiato.  Does that help narrow down the options?

A stove top is probably your best bet. A basic one will just do coffee, but spend a bit more (starting about $120 up to 450-500, depending on how fancy you want it to look) and you can get ones that have a wand for steaming milk as well. Check out sponsor Sorrentina Coffee (link on left) for some stove top options.

I think if you look at a La Pavoni it is only 32cm high... so should fit no problems (just). This will be perfect for your espressos and they have plenty of power for steaming too.

I have a Bellmann CX-25 stovetop with steam wand.

Steaming milk with it is superb. However, it is a 3 cuppa and I have had it for 3 months and havent had much success with getting it to an espresso tasting coffee - coffee from the stovetop is more like a long black. Maybe someone can give me some good insight into how to get the best out of my Bellmann

I also have a Presso. That comes closer to obtaining espresso style coffee you would even get good crema if operated properly.

Hi all, sorry to dredge up an old thread however I'm still looking for an espresso machine that is under 32cm high. For the past few years I've been enjoying a presso combined with a small grinder. I see a number of the Sunbeam models meet this specification. Are there some other high end alternatives that I could consider?

                              Thanks
