So $4 and ya can have ya knock box back to standard... Phftttttt to every one else
Sorry AM thats strike 2. The part you listed is for the Compact Designs knockbox. I have one of these now and it has a completely different knockbar to the Grindenstein. I think your first idea was on the money - a piece of garden hose or similar that is slit and fitted over the existing bar.

So the count is strike 2 ball 1  ;D

Err...I havent seen any group seals on a Grindenstein knockbox AM  :P

Matt - if you tap the grouphandle on to the knockbox bar (convenient non-technical term  :), do you notice any rubber come off onto to filter basket. If so, just wipe it off before preparing your next shot. .

You could also try clean the bar with ordinary detergent and water. Otherwise buy yourself a new knockbox. I had a Grindenstein and, with teh increased usage due to a wonderful GPP, I forked out for a newer and bigger one.

Edit: Yep, well snap to Greg Ws response

What part of Sydney are you in Matt? You can have my old Grindenstein if you want - well its less than 12 months old. I live in Ryde.
Wow, I need to update that! I moved to Melbourne from Sydney in October 08!

Bad day and Fat fingers and grubs between the ears..... That what ya get with 200kg of mangos rotting in the back yard  :

note to self... Drink more water.

OK.. Same result...  Once  they have been exposed to water / coffee oils / Cleaning solution and then left for any time they perish and go sticky... Rubber and Si seals alike... Same for O-rings... Just  a part of life.

Wash and or replace...   I use large Dia Si tubing and split it OR non ribbed garden hose...

Back to the school room for me  ;D

As far as I know the Grindensteins are knock-boxes and wouldnt have such a thing as a group-seal, but a rubber bumper on the cross-bar.

Other than that--yup, rubber perishes. Id replace it or take it off just in case any rubber stuck to the basket.

Sorry AM, Greg got it. I think I may have to bite the bullet and get a new knock box >.<

I have no idea what the "correct" terminology is (I would suppose that it has a name in the manufacturing industry, but I have worked as a barista and never known a specific name!) but I am refering to the actual rubber centre ring that makes contact with the group handle (thank you Andy for breaking bad habits!).

I have just (as in 2 hours ago) purchased my long lusted after Giotto Premium Plus and Mazzer Mini combo from Chris at Talk Coffee.

After setting everything up and letting the Giotto warm up, I pulled my Grindenstein down off the shelf to find that the rubber part has become disturbingly sticky!

First off, what might have caused this? It has been in storage for at least a year (in pantry/cupboard that is) where it has been out of sunlight but not exposed to moisture.

Secondly and *far* more importantly, does this present any risk to my new shiny baby? Could the "melted"/sticky rubber transfer to the group handle and damage the machine internals?

Matt (who needs to use less parentheses)
