  • Anyone make a Bakelite handled Tamper?

I really like the look and feel of the Bakelite portafiltro handle on my Elektra and started thinking that a matching Tamper would be nice.

Anyone know of a manufacturer that makes a good tamper in Bakelite?

Interesting option - does it have a wood grain appearance? I cant quite make it out in the picture as its a fairly dark specimen.

      Cheers.

Doubt you will have much luck with a Bakelite tamper handle Herzog, the material is an early plastic and not used much nowadays, modern plastics have taken over.
Talk Coffees Bogav duroplast handle looks similar to Bakelite, nice looking tamper.

Yeah I realise its a very old fashioned material - but it has a classic retro look, which I assume is why Elektra use it, despite being expensive to produce.

I googled up Duroplast, and Wiki describes it as a close relative of Bakelite. Interesting indeed.

            Hi Herzog

The Bogav doesnt have a wood grain finish.  Ive been using one at work and am loving it.  So much so that Ive decided to stock them in the shop.

If however, you really have your heart set on a bakelite tamper, google impod tamper.  They do produce a bakelite tamper and the handle is similar in shape to the Bogav, though again, perhaps not in woodgrain.

Oh, and the Impods are expensive!

            Cheers!

Do Electra still make machines with Bakelite handles?
As I recall one of the problems with old fashioned Bakelite was its tendency to degenerate (over a long period of time) under hot conditions, I imagine the material would have been modified since then.

              Cheers,

              Jon.

Yeah, I have two genuine Elektra portafiltri in Bakelite.

Apparently they sometimes ship with a rosewood handle, but mine came with the Bakelite.

The feel and appearance is simply beautiful, hence the search for a matching tamper!

Nice looking tampers, did you check out the Damascus steel base, certainly a thing of beauty, shudder to think about the price.

I would have thought youd be after a material without a wood grain pattern if you were looking for Bakelite. As far as I know the Impod is the only tamper that you can get a bakelite handle.

However if you ARE after something with a wood-grain appearance then Wenge is a good option. We make the Deluxe tamper handle in this wood. Predominantly black, with a dark brown grain. Thereve been a couple of requests to make this in the Barista range too and while nothings happened about that its a vague possibility, at least as a limited run.
