what about choosing a tamper as I wish I could see other than online but surely an eighty five dollar tamper of any kind should do the trick?
as long as it is the correct size..
one however has "a stepped groove to help determine the level to pack the ground coffee in your filter basket".....
dunno? dont seem to be a serious decision.
anything to know about choosing a tamper? :-?

    Re: tamper choice

Best if you can buy one you can try first.
A tamper that fits your hand as well as the basket is what youre looking for.
Plenty of site sponsors sell tampers.

Where are you and well point you to the nearest store.

      Re: tamper choice

As the owner of three properly custom fitted Pullman and the former owner of another couple of cheaper well fitted others. All do the job including one I still have that is nearly 2mm undersized for the machine it came with (but it doesnt get used anymore). But the Pullmans do it easier for me at least and suit mine and my staffs hands.

Like most tools it comes down to does it suit the job, does it suit the user and can that user make it do a good job time after time on a consistent basis. $$ cost should be a lower consideration than those other criteria I reckon at least.

If you find a $30 one that suits then great but dont be afraid to spend $$ on a good tool

Ditto what Thundergod said... tampers are a fairly personal choice and while many (including ourselves) hope the qualities of their product appeal to many, ultimately everyones different so what may suit one may not suit another. Tell us where you are and we can tell you some sponsors in the area.

Feel & comfort is the key
I found it hard to get one that fits my large hands

          Go and try some out

While I agree with everything said in terms of trying tampers, $$$ are always a consideration, otherwise we would all have synessos and roburs on our bench.

Yeah but we are talking about the difference between a $50 and $150 not $300 and $3000 ;D

Funny coming from a bloke with a very good collection of expensive shiny toys maybe you dont need the Mazzer, the Sunbeam might have done the job instead : Please dont misquote me either Price is a factor as I stated just dont consider that as the leading criteria.

How about catching a train to Bondi junction and checking out some tampers at Di Bartoli?

                        Re: tamper choice

How heavy should the Tamper be in grams?
I need a 52mm tamper for my Sunbeam but there are different weights.
The one Im considering is 220g stainless, my sisters 58mm is 350g
                        I saw a 53mm at 450g.
                        Any ideas on correct weight?

                        Cheers

I would imagine the correct weight to be what suits you the operator. Im not aware of one weight being better than another unless you were a pro using it hundreds of times a day.

There must be more to it than that, surely?
Im expecting someone to say the light ones are just as effective if you press down a little harder
                            Funny....it may be true?
Why get a heavier 450g tamper when a 220g is just as effective?
Are they to cater for coffee drinking weightlifters?

                            Cheers  ;D

                              Re: tamper choice

I have 500+g tamper that almost tamps itself.
I dont recall the weight of my Pullman tampers.

Personally I wouldnt like the feel of a light tamper.
The weight would not matter "technically" to me because Im quite capable of exerting as much force as required.

It really does come down to how it feels to you.
