checked it just now - after about 1 week non stop running has a black tinge but otherwise as before. wish I kenw someting about metal and what the black was and what it means!

re o-rings. i have ordered orings from coffee suppliers, and they are black. i hav e also used some made for tap fittings, which are also black and have lasted ok.

Thanks AM. The new valve I bought had what appears to be a stainless steel bearing in it. To be honest I wouldnt have had a clue what it was from the old ones, all corroded away. The surface is duller on the proper one, and my dodgy chrome ones where very shiny.

Trying to get into places is a nightmare with 2 kids & a pram! I might do a phone around first. I gotta measure them first...

Let me know how you go frabel. Also your oring... was it a red one? I found that a viton oring from the san marino solenoid fitted but the replacement was black and the rubber a little harder than the original.

    frabel,

Just inspected a ball bearing on one of my non return valves that I cleaned up and its heavily corroded already and I havent used it yet!!!  Must be a chrome ball bearing so now Im off looking for a stainless steel one.

Might be a good idea to check out yours, just incase.
Dont go cheep on these.. Small but critical for good operation... Fit for Purpose.

I would suggest you go to a true bearing supply place and or a marine supply shop..

Note. Some can be a ceramic and some are even a hard plastic/acrylic..    Depending on where located do not need even heat rated..  Damn... those beads from my daughters toy chest were the right size but had holes in them..

Yes. Vibe pumps etc use plastic and acrylic balls.. Lighter than SS..

    Fit for purpose..

probably not.the one it replaces wasnt either (given corrosion present).I wasnt particularly concerned unless anyone thinks I should be!
Too true. One of mine didnt even have the ball bearing in it... it had corroded and "disappeared". To be honest I didnt even know they used a plain old ball bearing until I saw this thread and checked the new one that arrived the next day. The other old one is black and I put it in cafetto vanish to clean it off. Its still black. Check it out here, http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1265198451/115#115

Anyway I got a whole ring (12 ball bearings) for $4.00 so I have plenty to play with.

frabel, was your oring red? My non return valves are 1/8" so might be smaller than yours. I hoping to get the orings from reece when I pick up some locktite 567 for my rebuild next week.

Would they be foodgrade if they are not stainless steel?

    frabel,

I found bearing at a bike shop too. Very helpful, but they did mention that they wouldnt be stainless steel ball bearings. What did you end up buying?

Im not exactly sure that they are made off. Would they be foodgrade if they are not stainless steel? Mmmm. Anyone got any ideas?

this is a vbm domobar super. i bought it from the previous owner as it would have cost them too much to repair (lots wrong with it). normally doesnt have this valve, but added it as part of adding rotary pump.

Thanks for the extra info frabel. Ill pop into a bike shop this week with the new ball bearing to see if they can help me.

What machine have you got? Are you rebuilding or just doing some routine maintenance?

Hi, the spring in mine was fine. I replaced the oring and the ball bearing.

In addition to the sleeve, mine also had a copper washer ontop of the sleeve which looked necessary to create pressure on the o ring.

I found a good fitting o ring at reeces - which they gave me free. The ball was from my measurements 5/16 inch if that helps (or .3114 in, so very slightly under 5/16 but that was probably all the corrosion) - the bike guy also gave me this free which was nice of him. Ive had it in the last day, and it is doing its job - so Ill call it a success!

    good luck!

    Hi frabel,

I just bought a new non return valve for my San Marino CK rebuild (the spring was a bit bent and the ball bearing was totally missing) which cost about $35.  After seeing this info I might refurb the old valve and the other non return valve on the machine.

I was just wondering if you had to replace any rubber o rings or the spring?  In mine there is a sleeve with a rubber oring at the end.

Was your refurb of the non return valve a success?

Thanks Randy. Bike shop it was. I toured all the local bearing shops, but all closed on weekends. So I tried the bike shop and he had the right size - but it was shimano!

Bicycle shops. Campagnolo bearings are the best, but any brand should do.
