Ah yes, the tamping block, my favorite accessory.

There have been a number of references to naked portafilters lately in regard to channeling.

As I said at the beginning of this thread I had a Rancillio PF made naked/stripped/nuded in June 2010, used it a few times (successfully) then stashed it in my drawer full of unused stuff as I much prefer the fully clothed version.

After reading about the channeling issues people are having and the conniptions they are going through in an effort to solve the problem I thought it was time to drag the nekin PF out (over 3 years since it saw the light of day) and give it a run to see if my technique had indeed slipped (as we keep being told will happen) changed the basket from my usual PF ground for my normal late PM double shot and let her rip.

Whadaya know, a perfect naked pour, seems I must be doing something right.

So, it's back into the drawer for the cut down job, I doubt it will ever see the light of day again.

PS don't ask me for a video of the pour, you'll just have to take my word, it really was good.

There's a bottomless PF on ebay - 58mm that they say is suitable for e61 groups. I have a 58mm Sunbeam and when I asked about buying another PF I was told on here I had to get a Sunbeam-specific one. I presumed that meant all those e61-compatibles were not for a SB. But the vendor on ebay says it is definitely suitable for a 6910.

They want $72 for it along with a triple filter. Given a SB PF is around $90 new it seems like a good deal... but will I be able to use it in my 6910? I've been unable to determine if the 6910 has an e61 type group or not.

It LOOKS the same as what I have...

So after one evening with the nekkid PF, I'm sold. My distribution/tamp, which I thought was alright, was absolute balls. Started with massive doughnuts and spritzes all over the show. After a bit of experimenting most of my extractions are sweet, with at worst a small dead patch or too. They're tasting substantially better, too, which justifies the half-pound of coffee I've gone through (thank god for decaf...)

In the end I found that the best way to deal with distribution was grind into the 300ml steel jug that came with my Cafe Roma (which is useless for pouring), flick it about to break up the clumps, then evenly pour the grinds into the portafilter and smooth with my finger. Works a treat.

the problem is that the part which extracts first blondes first, so you either cut short or get a partially blonded shot.

I dunno dude; I've seen some of the girls getting around coffee shops and I'm not sure that would be such a bad thing (the stripping, not the burns, burns are bad, m'kay?)

Also, just got a nekkid PF in the mail... sitting on my desk... waiting for lunch... dammit.

You know any neophyte reading this thread is going to wind up stripping off all their clothes to make their coffee, right? And we'll all get sued to pay for the burn unit treatment... Click image for larger version
