  • Wanted New Rancilio Miss Lucy

    ,Hi Folks,

Im a brand new member, just joined today.

After researching for weeks on the net I have decided to buy a Rancilio Miss Lucy as an upgrade from my Sunbeam Cafe Series & Krups Grinder (blush). I have been reasonably happy with my old equipment, except for the weaker shots but after seeing my friends Trevi Spidem Automatica Ive decided to go for a less labour intensive way to enjoy my coffee.  I live in Brisbane & have no idea where to start looking to for the Rancilio. .  Any suggestions would be welcome.
    John.

Id definitely suggest that you reconsider and get the rocky/sylvia combo if thats the pathway you wish to take....

The risks of combining into one unit:

    1. One dead, both dead
    2. Hard to clean/service the grinder
    3. Hot beans are not a good thing if youre interested in the freshest product...

    just my two bobs

    Chris

I think most would agree that you should go for the Silvia/Rocky combo over the Lucy. Combo units limit upgrade options and can render both units out of action if one fails.

        However.....

if John has his heart set on a lucy, it *may* be possible to get one whilst it is almost impossible to get a silvia / rocky right now. Ill make a couple of calls.

        Or, as an alternative...

we do have stock right now of the La Pavoni Domus Bar. It is a similar arrangement...ie, brass boiler domestic machine WITH group solenoid valve, and a good grinder incorporated in the body. The grinder is the usual hardened conical set of burrs as fitted to lux / iberital / isomac / splendor and who knows how many other grinders...and it is a stepless adjustment which is quite handy.

The standard of build & finish is excellent and dare I say much better than that of the silvia / lucy machines (and lets face it, you have to look at it long term in your kitchen) and in the absence of the rancilio models, runs in a very good second in terms of what it does.

Sold 2 of these in the last week to people that would otherwise have bought silvia and a grinder, and was running one today on the bench before delivery.

By the way we have no shortage of rockys...just silvia.

        regardz,
        FC.

Of course- I am assuming you might follow sirhc8s advice and go with the silvia over the lucy.

Clicking on that link, its worth noting that the seller also sells surfboards. I hope the sellers expertise and after-sales service is as diverse as their product range.

Re: Wanted New Rancilio Miss Lucy

yup just one comment about that.

I would recommend people spend money in coffee equipment only where they can subsequently get service. And that doesnt just mean "lip" service....I also mean  "breakdown" service etc.

Internet traders that buy equipment from an importer to sell online, very often take no responsibility for service or guarantee...and you may find that if a problem develops, a certian amount of finger pointing may ensue that may result in the buyer being left out in the cold.

And as an "aside", we may shortly see a tightening up (or perhaps drying up) of availability of silvia/rocky equipment on the net.

                regardz,
                FC.

PS, no shortage of rockys for sale in my place of employment at the moment, and we repair what we sell.

Re: Wanted New Rancilio Miss Lucy

                  John,
I have a Rancilio Miss Lucy which I acquired second hand but as new.
I am very happy with the machine especially since I converted it to a PID control.
As regards cleaning the grinder it only requires 3 screws to be removed to gain access to the grinder, I agree the beans probably would warm up over a prolonged period but I keep them in a separate storage container and only put a measured amount in the hopper this way the dose is exact and storage is best ( I did this with my Imat Mokita ) . The main draw back with the machine being the grinder is fitted with a timer and it is hard to get a measured amount of coffee if the timer is not exact you get too much or not enough and to adjust this the top has to be pulled off the machine and water tank removed. Each press of the button gives you a preset grind time.
I Like the Idea on the machine being all in one but I must admit before I got the Lucy Sivia was the way I was heading, If you like the Lucy go for it.
I did and I am very pleased.
I am happy to talk if you want more Info.
                  Cheers
                  Robert
