    Re: Miss Silvia questions

An Iberital grinder goes very well with Miss Silvia. I chose one without the doser, so it grinds directly into the portafilter basket. The adjustment is very fine and continuous, no knotches or detents which can over- or under-compensate the grind. Furthermore, it has a neat little timer (a screw) and pressing the portafilter against a switch under the holder turns it on.

Needless to say, the shots are fantastic, with a deep, dark crema. I recommend using glass instead of a cup so the crema formation can be appreciated more.

    Re: Miss Silvia questions

    Hi Mundi,

Ive found when I first got my Silvia (only a month ago), I was getting good looking, dry pucks out of it. But I soon discovered I was using too course a grind (shop ground). I think I have now got this right, the coffee tastes much better, great crema, and stronger, but the pucks now come out wet on top if I remove them immediately after brewing. But if I leave them in for just a minute or so, they come out pretty dry - so Im not sure when you should gauge the "dryness". I bet this hasnt helped you one bit, I just wanted to assure you that youre not the only one on that steep learning curve.

    Hi Mundi

If you tamp too hard youll end up with no shot as the pump wont be able to push water through the grounds.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys,
The crema is ok but not great, and the coffee is a good strength. Is it possible to over tamper or in other words over compress the grind?

Part of your problem could also be that your grind is too fine.
Also remember that with different roasts also comes different grinding grades.

Nice to hear you becoame the proud Parents, Does she sleep all of the way through the night.... ;D

You will also find that the Coffee Grinds left over after you brew are also very good for your garden.

    Re: Miss Silvia questions

    There are a few options.
Could be not enough coffee in the portafilter.
Could be the tamp is not correct.

How is the coffee and the crema coming out?
If it is not very strong, then the grind might be too coarse.

Another New Miss Silvia owner and question

    Hi ppl,
We became the proud parents of a mIss Silvia on Tuesday and have started on the learning curve to a perfect coffee.
We purchased the Rocky as well as the local reseller did a good deal. My first question of many to come.
When I empty the portafilter after making a cup the spent grinds are a lot wetter than when the dealer was showing me how to do it. What would be the cause of this?

    Thanks
    Leigh

    Re: Miss Silvia questions

Does anyone know where I can buy a Rancilio Rocky and Silvia combo? Sienna and coffeeco both seem unable to supply at the moment. Ive spent months saving up to buy a Silvia but now I have the money they arent available (seemingly).

Country NSW has a new distributor for Racilio gear as well............. There prices are good as well, We bought a KitchenAid K5 mixer from them for nearly $500 less than RRP, nice people to deal with too.

If I didnt have my Boema I would be looking at the Sylvia too!
