pulled the reservoir off to top it up, and it was full of nesting ants! (in the dry half of it anyway)... 
cleaned it out, but there were still a few crawling aroud the machine. Pulled off the back cover and found a few more. But still some were crawling out of gaps.
Eventually I had to pull off the power supply cover (a small straight blade works in those security Torx screws), and found another nest! Some vacuuming and a few hours away and they eventually decided to leave...
Anyway, for interest I snapped a few photos inside the Sunbeam (sans ants though)...

.... If so, it will ultimately fail if the Zener Diode itself doesnt fail first from excessive heat. Still might be worth checking out, even if its just to resolder the joint itself, easy to do and the elimination of headaches further on down the track as a bonus
