Gentlemen, the jury is out - the Faema is 99% good. After buying a hose barb and fitting it, the pump and the machine is running beautifully.
Unfortunately the replacement pump seems to be a little longer (especially with the hose barb connected) so there is some pressure being applied by the barb on internal wiring and the elbow join on the outlet was knocking against the outer casing - so it was a synfony of noise at first. After some adjusting of the rubbers, the noise has stopped, but Im not happy about the way the inlet hose and barb is running through some wiring. The next step is to get an elbow pointing up on the inlet so the barb has ample space. - Most frustrating, but at least I can get back to making coffee!
Thank- you for your help!

from what you describe. Sparky knows a lot more than I do about the Family and Im sure he can help you out. The Diode though, is required to provide a Half-wave Rectified Output to the Coil of the Pump. This effectively gives the pump an operating frequency of 25 Hz and as a result, full stroke of the piston inside the pump body. A 50 Hz supply only allows the pump piston to operate at half or less its designed full stroke and thus provides for a lot less output and a significantly less amount of noise too.
