  • Best of the cheaper tampers?

As much as I would LOVE a forest green Pullman tamper I just cant afford it

So what is the best of the cheaper tampers?

Sorry forgot to add that Im pretty sure it will be 49mm, this size being harder to find.

Ive been reading and searching and reading both here on CS and all the other websites I can find but am just going around in circles.

Its stupid I think to myself whats an extra $50 odd for something that will help make the coffee experience better!

    ARGH

    Hi Shapeshifter

    Have a look over http://shop.talkcoffee.com.au/collections/types?q=Tampers

We have a few Rattleware left at $40 and at $85, the Bogav outpunches pretty much anything up to about $130 in my opinion.

The Rattleware fit in the hand nicely (used to have a 53mm) and if you know someone (6 pack job or a bag of beans) who has a lathe then $40 + post from Chris is cheap for a good tamper.

Some of the cheapies I have had a play with feel bad to hold which will make them a pain to use so the best bet is to have a play in real life.

A very happy owner of 4 Pullman Tampers  :

Oh well I just figured out that its not relevant anyway, the Pullman I want isnt available in the size I need.  So cheaper version it is anyway LOL.

Thanks Charlie, I think Ill wait until I come down to Sydney (you are the closest to my parents place) in the next few weeks or so and come and have a play and buy some other things Im wanting

as far as Im concerned.. As long as it fits your basket well (nice and snug), has a good tamping surface and is comfortable to use, it doesnt matter whether its $20 or $200 :

Re: Best of the cheaper tampers?

kotaro, thats pretty much what I thought to start off with, then I saw all the pretty colours and that forest green is just perfect I do love my colours.

Anyway when discussing this with my OH he pretty much said the same thing, why spend more money on something that does the same thing (Ive spent 2 years looking for the right knifes and forks that had the correct balance so I figure its a little like that), did I mention the colours ;D

I read somewhere someone saying that their friend uses his thumbs to tamp and it was a fantastic espresso.

All a learn experience so I dont mind using the plastic tamp with the Presso before I advance to a metal one

haha yeh, well there is that too.  ;D
suppose I cant really comment becuase I just forked out for a pretty tamp when I already had a perfectly good one.
I think, if youre still using the stock plastic tamp, thats enough exscuse to go for a better one.  And i guess, its the sort of thing that you should only really need to buy once.  (unless you find yourself acquiring an e61 group machine - which prolly warrents an extra $100 budget for a tamp anyway).

so there you go, Ive successfully confused the both of us in arguing both ways.

Best advice I can give is to take your basket along to a few shops and physically put the tamp in, buy the one that fits best .. you can always paint it green if you must :P

Whoops....Speed skimming will catch you out every time.... :-[

One thing that I forgot to mention is that Bogav stock is 100% local, being manufactured in the eastern burbs of Melbourne. The Assassin is a heap cheaper than other 316 stainless adjustable options.

Re: Best of the cheaper tampers?

LOL Chris the best of us do it too

Haha kotaro that I can do and great suggestion about the basket, I will make sure I do that too, although I have got confirmation from Greg at Presso that its definitely a 49mm tamper that is needed.

I didnt mean to make myself sound like Ive never got money for good things but I do have set budgets and had the amounts set out for the BeanBay beans and grinder (the Presso being a birthday present from my OH).

I had already completely over extended in my original thoughts of spending up to $1k, phew Im so glad I kept reading and found a way to get into the swing of things without spending a fortune (to me anyway)

We did have access to a lathe but unfortunately that access is now denied, for how long we dont know...

Anyway waffling, thanks everyone for all your suggestions and will look forward to having a play in Cremorne in a little while

Re: Best of the cheaper tampers?

To balance the equation, the 316 adjustable option fairly obviously being referred to in the post two above is likewise manufactured in Australia and in fact has Product of Australia endorsement as being 100% Australian. Its definitely more expensive, but the bottom line with that product is that its designed to a specification, not a price.

                          * its adjustable with three contoured stainless steel spacers
                          * its perfectly balanced
                          * has a rubber insert into the base for extra comfort
                          * has a custom-sized base to suit whatever machine you need (at this time only down to 57mm)
                          * can be supplied with matched filter baskets if required
                          * each one has a serial number in case you ever need another one made to the same spec
                          * comes in a whole range of different colours and materials
                          * various custom engraving options available

Does that make it the perfect tamper? Theres no such thing! There are lots of well-made tampers which have different features which appeal to different people. So by all means sing the praises of whichever product floats your boat (or business), but dont imply a one-dimensioned comparison is the whole picture. "xyz is a heap cheaper but by the way it lacks feature A, B and C" would be a fairer comment but I doubt well be reading that anytime soon.

shapeshifter, 49mm Baristas should be around in the first quarter of next year. The Barista was always designed as a commercial product and at the time I designed it there were other high-end products on the market which catered for the smaller sizes so I chose to not compromise other aspects of its design for the sake of one or two machines which used smaller baskets. Those other products are gone now so were getting a smaller rubber insert moulded up which will allow us to cater for the full range of sizes in the Barista, as we can with the Deluxe. 49 will normally fit a Presso, but my own Presso gets a better fit with a tamper thats a touch bigger than that.

Might like to grab a cheapie in the meantime and check back early next year.

                          Greg

If I understand correctly Greg, youre suggesting that the Bogav tampers design is not founded upon a set of specifications, but rather a price point.

If so, Id appreciate it if you could clarify how you came to that conclusion?

Not at all Dennis. I can only speak for my own products, and I can say I made a conscious decision with the Barista to include certain features which I knew would push up the price. I.e. I chose a particular specification at the expense of a low price. Others may well have wanted a different specification which allowed for a lower price, but it doesnt mean price was their sole object. Nor however does it follow that simply because a certain product is cheaper, that features on a more expensive product should be ignored and only the higher price tag referred to.

Without having seen one in the flesh, it sounds as though Gavins done a great job with his tampers and Im happy to recommend them to people wanting a tamper with a different spec to ours (just as Ive recommended Reg Barber, Coffeelab and others in the past). Its just a pity this respect doesnt normally run both ways.
