  • Alternatives to a Knock-out

    Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some thoughts on what everyone uses to get rid of their beans from the group handle after youve perpared an espresso shot...

I currently use a knock out which I dont really like as I find it is messy even when I have a solid puck. Plus it needs regular cleaning to avoid mould.

I cant knock into the sink as it blocks it, and dont want to knock into the garbage bin direct as this is unhygenic...

Am I being to picky? Does anyone use anything else or have any alternative suggestions?

I knock mine into a Grindenstein, which are sold by several site sponsors. It holds 5 - 8 pucks in it. Empty if once a day, and its quite clean. Can go through the dishwasher, or be rinsed under hot water. I find its a good compromise between a big knock box, and putting them down the sink.

First sponsor hit on google: http://www.coffee-a-roma.com.au/shop/en/accessories-3/grindenstein-knock-box-29.html

Same, I put my grounds on the garden and lawn, I would only empty mine when its full so maybe once a week. Never had a mould problem.

Weve got a Knock Box that was purchased from Coffee Parts years ago. Definitely NOT messy as Im a pretty clumsy bugger when it comes to doing things like that. Also clean out daily or at worst, every two days and never see mould growth....

maybe too picky .....maybe just line your knock box with a small plastic bag just like a bin liner, might not be attractive but will save you a bit of cleaning maybe....then wipe out your pf with a little bit of paper towel to get rid of stray grinds and wipe off the knock tube with the same piece before putting it in the bin.....

Whatever you use, just make 100% sure you NEVER knock the grounds out by banging on anything metal, or you will destroy the edges of the basket quickly and your handle will start leaking.

Our grounds go under the fruit trees, but since were lazy they often build up and go mouldy before we get around to it. Green mould at first, but if you wait long enough youll get some really funky bright orange mould too!

                Re: Alternatives to a Knock-out

Funny the things that we can get focused on; when I started making espresso I thought I would never use the knock-box; too messy and unsightly. But then I found out there were no practical alternatives that were less messy or more attractive. So what the heck; I use my Grindenstein all the time and rinse it once or twice a week. Looks kinda cool.

I used a knock box and to help with over spray ;D I made this back plash from a piece of light perspex work fine

I now have a grinder drawer and that eliminates all mess

                  Cheers Gra..

+1 Grindenstein, when the pucks dry out you could try some "puck art" or just put them in the compost. The drawer Gra has looks good though, mmmm shiny.
