Re: Saeco Aroma
On the alzheimers, the jury currently says that aluminium does not cause it.... however aluminium does build up in alzheimers paitents, if you have a genetic predispostion it does make sense to avoid it.
But heres the question that I raised... how do you know your predispostion... you dont. Sensible thing is avoid the stuff.
Many specialists wont say that publically though but the above is the summarised result of a private conversation with one.
Although asians use heaps of aluminum in all their cooking, without higher incidence of alzheimers. Further, when you eat out you are mainly eatinig in aluminum cookware... pots are heavy... stocks, jams and other commercial foods are nearly all made in Aluminum pots. Doctors will always play down the potentials with a sceptical approach which is mostly good but not always an accurate representation of the evidence.
Thermoblocks give people the biggest dose of aluminuim then boilers... hmmm... gaggia is has aluminium boiler components, but it is a pretty good machine and good value...
Its up to the individual to decide for themselves... unfortunately most dont have the time or access to the information to make and informed judgement, so then have to rely on opinions of others (experts or otherwise). I avoid aluminium as much as possible including in antiperspirants etc.
Maybe I should stop talking about the gaggia because of the alumium but it is still a good machine in spite of that.

Re: Saeco Aroma
I dont think the court is still out on the Alzheimers - any relevance of Aluminium was identified as symptomatic not causal - dont worry about Aluminium boilers for health reasons, worry more about the corrosion potential.

Yep, both have stainless steel boilersOriginally posted by telemaster link=1156320721/0#5 date=1156399934
im pretty certain that like the via venezia the aroma has a 180 ml stainless steel boiler-
aluminium is great for bikes, tent frames, aerospace etc- dont like it for food or beverages- alzheimers comes on quickly enough with out giving it any help
now what was i doing?

(not sure of the size)
I dont like aluminium in any food prep equipment.... I think the court is still out on its link with alzheimers...... but hey, why take a chance (not to mention frequently replacing the thermo block / boiler)

Re: Saeco Aroma
i used a saeco via venezia (similar) for 6 years with no worries- my son has it now and it is going in for its first service- not bad!Originally posted by andrian link=1156320721/0#0 date=1156320720Hey guys, think of getting a new espresso machine in the range of nothing above $350. Know that that isnt too much to get a top of the range models like Rancho and so on.
But ive stumbled upon Aroma which has a steel boiler, not common in for all other espressos in my budget range.
Any thoughts on that or other recommendations? Saw the Breville Cafe Roma which have been getting not too bad reviews.
Thanks!
nice little machine and you can get a non pressurised handle for $50
all the best

Re: Saeco Aroma
Gday Andrian and welcome to the forum.
Although we are Snobs, were only snobby about the end product, not how we got it
.
In the money range youre talking about, you will be limited somewhat, especially if youre intent on buying an espresso machine. The most important, but often overlooked, part of the set up, as Liquidheaven has mentioned, is the grinder.
If you dont have a decent grinder, then your budget of $350 is out the window. I would suggest that you buy a good grinder and a plunger (french press for our US residents) and get some freshly roasted beans.
If you have a decent grinder, then the machine you mentioned appears like a good little machine with a stainless boiler.
Hope this helps.

asking a bunch of snobs...hmmm... I wouldnt have a much of clue...
The only one that Ive tried that make something called coffee is the gaggia classic... domayne had them on sale for under $500... evilBay sometimes has them as well (300-450)...
Below that I only know that sunbeam gets a lot of press for their budget model... cant vouch for anything there... I dislike thermoblocks and pressurise baskets... though I have just come off that rollercoaster, so I have some experience there.
Check gaggia out in that price bracket, saeco now owns them... so I am prettty sure that their newer cheaper models are being badged up. You will need to change the pressure on the gaggia classic... but that will make you a better cup than any else that Ive tried out of the domestic price bracket you are interested in.....
Lastly I suggest you read the forum to understand more... a grinder (important) like the sunbeam would be a good match and you will probably want to spend and buy one eventually.... then the rest is up to you...
Hope this helps.
