Re: Importance of a good tamper
Ah, fair enough! My apologies to Aido.
I didnt like the idea of someone using the forum to wrap legit sponsor sites in the posters ads. The sponsors ads are an entirely different story!

all.at/coffeetampers was our original URL but back then it didnt have the advertising. Ive kept it just because some documentation still has that URL but havent advertised it for probably seven or so years now.

Re: Importance of a good tamper
Everything mentioned on this thread regarding the dedication of Greg Pullman to his product and service is true. I have an EAZYTAMP tamper, a Precise Fit Tamper and now the Pullman Barista Tamper and wow, there really is a difference. First off, EAZYTAMP is not very pretty and a straight 58mm tamper. Great for consistant tamping force but without a precise fit it really isnt giving an even tamp throughout the basket. The precise fit tamper from Jetblack is a heavy tamper. I like it and it does the job well too and the price is very competitive. My only qualm with the precise tamp is the height of the handle which I found too tall for my hand. Now the Pullman tamper is a different beast all together. Well balanced, adjustable handle height, feels good in the hand and the base is custom made to fit your basket not to mention the handle comes in a huge array of colours and options including once again custom made handles. It truly is a customised tamper in every way, from the service you receive from Greg to the manufacture of the product. This is the selling point and this is why it is priced the way it is. At around the mid $100s it is an investment decision that didnt come lightly, but once you have the tool in your hot little hands, youll have nothing to complain about.

Re: Importance of a good tamper
Lately I have been experiementing with the quantity of grounds in the basket, and I have experienced the same things with Alan Frew. I realised that its important to have a dry puck with a clear impression of the screw.
This can only be achieved if there is contact between the shower screen and the puck.
This stops water channeling and ensures that water is passed through all the grounds, and does not find a way around the grounds, thus maximising coffee extraction.
As there are no gaps on the top, it will also prevent coffee getting burnt on the top layer.
With a dry puck this makes it easier to get the grounds out compared with a slushy puck.
The only way I have been able to get a dry puck, was not by following 7g grounds/shot, but by over filling basket, levelling off, and tamp. I dont know how much grounds I am using, but this worked for my Gaggia Classic, as well as the La Valentina I have now.
I think what we want to achieve is consistency in our shots, so if we can minimise the variables, it makes it easier to get repeatable "god" shots.
The only drawback, the rate as which I am depleting my beans!

Re: Importance of a good tamper
I also got a tamper from Greg (http://all.at/coffeetampers). I also received excellent service and have no hesitation recommending his products.
After I bought it, I did read an interesting article by Alan Frew: http://coffeeco.com.au/articles/tweaks.html
He found that if you pack the basket with 15g of coffee tamp pressure is irrelevant.
Regardless, I do like toys and a good tamper looks great. Plus its much easier to use than the standard (wrong size) plastic tamp that comes with Miss Silvia.

Re: Importance of a good tamper
I must admit I liked using the Tampers I turned from Wood, but The Brass Tamper I had made weighing just over a Kilo is the best thing since sliced cheese, Do I put any pressure on the tamper No. Just place it in am make sure its straight and 2-3 twists from side to side and hey presto....
I would agree with you here Warren..... Theres nothing like a Real tamper.

Importance of a good tamper
Hi all,
Up until now I didnt realise the importance of a good tamper. Ive been persisting (suffering) with an InCasa tamper for my 57mm baskets. Has a slightly convex base and thought that this was as good as it gets. Shots are OK, however I rarely seemed to get a solid puck when I knocked it out. Also the tamper would jam in my baskets and usually pull the thing out. The crema also seemed to dissipate on my shots rather quickly.
Just received a custom tamper from Greg Pullman. (Thanks Greg) Boy what a difference a piece of metal can make! Service was great too.
Just tamped and pulled a shot. The difference in crema is astonishing! Its also the first time Ive knocked out a puck in tact.
NAYY. Just a VERY satisfied customer. I know most of you probably have one already but if you dont I urge you to give these wonderful tampers a go. Theyre visually stunning too.
Didnt think that a tamper would make so much difference. Preaching to the converted now.
