  • Gaggia shower screen

Hi all. I have a New Baby Gaggia and for the life of me I have not been able to remove the shower screen to clean it. The nut is in so tight that each time Ive tried Ive only succeeded in damaging it. Short of taking it to the manufacturer I dont know what else to do. Back flushing isnt removing the coffee that is under the screen.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Gaggia? Does anyone have any neat tricks which they could recommend? Thanks.

I was going to suggest to: first try to tighten the screw/nut up a little and then try to loosen it. Sometimes this tightening action breaks the locked thread.
If that does not work, try to loosen it when the machine is
    1. hot
    2. cold
As Fresh said if it is under warranty take it back. If you damage it then you could void your warranty.
    PS
I had been signing some posts as JD. Sorry, I hope I did not confuse forum members. I will change how I sign off my posts.

      LOL,

If Its like the classics group the screen should come off by removing the screw in the centre.
The manual describes this as part of the cleaning process.

Backflush in not possiable on these unit as only the classic is fitted with the 3way solenoid.

If is really really tight, Id contact your supplier as it should come off.

            Your Right

I thought the classic was the only domestic machine with this valve this...and went along way to my purchase decision.
Oh well. I knew next to nothing about coffee back then and though the classic was the best you could buy, I couldnt have been more wrong not having entered the dark underworld that is coffee. 8).....
Now I cant wait to source a semi-commercial machine and off load the classic.

Well for non-HX home machines, they have their pluses and minuses like any other and in terms of espresso quality, its damned close to a HX machine with care (OK, the Sylvia IS HX quality with a lot of care). couldnt have been more wrong seems awfully strong wording to me.

Anyway, back to OT, Ive have found these showerscreen screws to be very tight on new Gaggias and you need to put a lot of force on the screwdriver to get it off cleanly (awkward when you have to push up). They must come from the factory that way and once you do get it off, you only have to make it just bottom out when retightening. If it wont loosen even when hot, you could resort to an impact driver but you would have to remove the grouphead boiler assembly from the machine to get room to use it. Luckily, dismantling Gaggias is a VERY task.

                  Hi,

There seems to be some conflicting information here...

Before I blow a hole in my kitchen ceiling (or me!)...can I backflush a Gaggia Classic.

And if I can, does the backflushed liquid come down the oveflow pipe (to the driptray) or the over pressure hose to the reservoir??

                  thanks
                  Dave

                    Re: Gaggia shower screen

A Gaggia classic has a three-way-valve so therefore can be backflushed. When you backflush and turn the brew switch off the water will flow into drip tray.

If you are unsure of how to backflush I would suggest you do a search on here for technique so you dont do any damage to yourself or your machine.

                      Thanks for the info Brett...

While I was waiting for a response I was doing some further reading and found a link to the Whole Latte Love site with a good explanation...so I think Ill give it a go.

                      Cheers

Well Ive done the brew pressure mod.

The allen screw was locked down hard (got absolutely no flow at all)...I started out with Sparkys initial 270 degree turn...but had to make another 3 x 180 degree turns before I got the 100mls in 30 secs.

Pulled a few test shots and check measured again.

Cant seem to get the grind right...but Im working on it.
