  • The Golden One

    Hey Everyone

Came across this tonite, not sure who has seen this before but I thought it was worth sharing! A guy on coffeegeek took his 2 week old brewtus apart, and has had it gold plated! Talk about "pimp my espresso machine" ! He even had Reg Barber make a wooden handle for the pf and lever. It looks quite stunning indeed.

Check out the full story here: http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/esp...achines/142296

Looks like either copper, or "Black Hills gold." While it may be stunning, it seems like a bit of a wank job to me. I can think of plenty of things to better spend my money on than gold plating my espresso machine. Maybe a better grinder?

I remember when it was the rage to get your BMX frame chromed. I stuck with my tried and true stainless steel Mongoose frame. It was heavier than the chrome or aluminium alloy bike frames but 10 times sturdier.

        Re: The Golden One

This lunatic spent $US600 to have the cabinet copper plated and the group head and wands done in gold.  He was also without his machine for 10 weeks.  All because his wife didnt like the "industrial" look of the machine.  I wonder if she likes the look of coffee grounds in the grout on the tiled bench? Each to his own - but isnt it amazing how what people see as "classy" just ends up looking ostentatious and tacky?  Thank God we havent got the 360 degree tour of this guys place.  A glimpse of the sink and the twice as wide as it should be "mortar" between the stick on "bricks" on the wall shows that things dont improve once you get beyond the coffee area. 8-) 8-) Not that Im being judgemental :P

Thats a good find, El Espressio. Where can I get one. Ostentatious--mois? Just kidding.
But from a practical point of view, why would you copper-plate polished stainless steel? You go from a surface which is what its name implies -- stainless -- to copper which is bound to tarnish with time.

Also, while the retro look has its appeal, in the kitchen it reminds me of the bad old days of copper saucepans sitting on cast-iron Lux stoves and even worse, open-fire "stoves". Brrrrrr.

Is this a bad time to mention that the Giotto is available with 24K gold side panels?

I actually think the mod looks rather good, but it does seem excessive to do as a retro job rather than being a factory supplied option. Now he needs to do something similar with that ugly grinder. :

            Cheers

I would have to agree -
              Ugly as a hatfull -
Remember those stereos and ghetto blasters that shout things like  DUAL CORE TWEETER ASSYMETRICAL DIODE CROSSOVER SYSTEM and stuff like that? What makes a great espresso machine beautiful is that it is a great example of form following function - it is what it is precisely because of what it does.  It draws attention to itself because of this simplicity.  If you had a Porsche or a Ferrari or a Lexus would you be putting stripes and stickers and god knows what else on it?
Im as much into interior design as anybody, but I draw the line at this repulsive piece of gangasta rapper ghetto pimp whoring filth.  YUK!!!! >
And check out those mugs on the top.. :
Ever noticed how anyone who does the JPS racing car thing (gold and black) inevitably makes the thing they are doing it to look bad?  A bathroom with gold taps looks like a pimp palace - as does this loonys $600 mod.
