Re: La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
Hi Bruce (Billi),
Sorry to have taken so long to get back to you. It took a while to get used to the new LM filter, and I wanted to try it out across a few different coffees.
I am very pleased to say that this is a great filter. It makes for a genuine improvement to the quality of espresso. The resultant espresso is fuller-bodied, richer and more deeply flavoured, and theres more crema produced (if you care for the visual aspect of things).
I am guessing that this improvement is due to the larger dose of coffee, as well as the unusual geometry of the filter. Whatever the reasons may be, its the best $13 Ive spent!
Takes a bit of getting used to, but after the initial challenge of dosing accurately, its actually easier to use than the original Silvia basket. Id say that this is because it is more difficult to under/over dose, as the ridge on the basket prevents severe under-dosing. Its also equally difficult to over-dose, as you hit the group, and the PF cant be locked into place.
Well, theres my 2 cents worth. Give it a go, you wont regret it!
Cheers,
Avi
P.S.: For those who are interested I am refering to the LM original double filter basket, purchased from Coffeeparts. The product is part number 300013, and can be found at http://www.coffeeparts.com/mar/mar1.html

If you have sent in the basket to Greg, then you should have the perfect fit. I didnt bother and ordered a 58.4 which is a little too tight. If you do change the basket, then sending in the Silvia basket will be a pointless excercise anyway....
Cheers

No, I didnt send it - didnt want to be without :-) I took the filter to the hardware shop and they measured it for me with caliphers. Hope they did it correctly :-) Fingers and toes crossed :P
I do realise that if I change the basket... I only found this thread after Id ordered it ;D

Oh, dear! My Pullman tamper is in the mail :-) Has yours been made to size? I hope mine wont stickOriginally posted by franjae link=1132891114/0#4 date=1132927731My Pullman tamper sticks in the Silvia basket and that forced me to try the LM basket. So far so good. The Lm basket is deeper and fits the Silvia PF better, at least it stays on when Im knocking out the puck.

Re: La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
Avi,
I too back up the recommendation for the LM double basket, i think youll be happy with it.
I found it much easier to produce consistently good shots than the standard Silvia double basket and easier to dial in the grind on the rocky.
I also got an LM portafilter (all bits from coffeeparts) to replace the flimsier original silvia portafilter (newer silvias have the commercial PF) which also allows the LM 21g triple basket to fit in. I think this basket has good potential but getting consistent results is not easy.
Cheers

Avi, the basket is not expensive, so give it a try. I bought mine from coffeeparts and the service is top notch and delivery is next day (and Im in Perth).

Re: La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
Hi ,
I have had the LM basket for a few months now , personally I think the rancillio basket I have found the easiest to use , my initial reaction to the basket was a positive one but the novelty soon wore off .
I found it much harder to user than the silvia basket , you are able to get to a much finer grind in silvias basket , you can fit more into the LM basket but you need to grind around 2 to 3 notches up from what you would use in the silvia basket.
The most painful thing is the ridge that makes it hard to properly tamp the coffee whereas the rancilio basket is very easy to tamp, I dont think it is worth buying personally .

Re: La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
Hi Avi
Got mine from Allpress Espresso - LM distributors - in Sydney. Cost was around $8. No problems fitting into Silvia portafilter. Seemed to help with improving shot consistency - probably a bit more forgiving than the Rancilio double basket - you can fit more coffeee in it with a slightly coarser grind.
Best

Re: La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
Avi
Background: I purchased my Silvia 10 months ago and have used a LM basket for about 6 months.
1. This is the only place I am aware of (but have not looked elsewhere). There service is excellent. I placed an order on Wednesday at about 3.00pm and received the delivery at 9.30 the next day (Sydney - Melbourne no less).
2. I think they only have the one type which has a ridge. Dont quote me on this but I believe 300013 is the original from LM (at least a direct copy) and 521994 is a general basket which fits a variety of manufacturers. Have a look at this link which appears to be the same organisation but with a different layout and information. http://www.jumbocoffee.com.au/accessories/baskets.html
Note the 18gm basket doesnt fit Silvia’s portafilter, however after I make a small adjustment to my naked portafilter I think it will.
3. I use part 300013 and its fits like a glove, no problems.
4. In my opinion the LM basket is a little deeper and allows more coffee into the basket, it produces more crema and a creamier mouth feel. On the other hand it does tend to let some coffee grounds into the cup.
I hope this helps
Cheers

La Marzocco double filter basket for Silvia
I have finally decided to take the plunge and get a La Marzocco double filter basket for my Silvia. I have a number of questions that I would like to put to the esteemed members of this forum before I make my order:
1. Where should I make the purchase? To my knowledge the only (and best) source is www.coffeeparts.com.
2. Should I get the ridged or ridgeless basket? Does Coffeeparts stock both items? Having a look at their website (http://www.coffeeparts.com/mar/mar1.html) they have two versions of the LM 14g double filter basket - part numbers 300013 and 521994. I cant work out the difference between the two.
3. Are there problems with fitting the LM basket into the Silvia PF? I hear that the ridgeless filter has a tendency to fall out when the puck is knocked out. Apparently it doesnt sit too tightly within the Silvia PF.
4. Does upgrading to the LM filter really improve the quality of the shots?
Thanks very much for your help
