    Re: Stainless Tamper Sizes

It comes down to personal preferrence ... some people prefer a tamper thats slightly smaller than the basket, so they can do the round the clock, or the north, south, east, west tamp (which is really tamping four times). Ive found that a smaller tamp gives you more compression, whereas a well fitting tamp (its a fraction too big if it gets stuck - a great reason to either measure your baskets, or send them to your tamp maker) makes the job quicker, and eliminates areas in the puck that arent tamped as hard/packed in as tightly.

Tamping is all about uniformity. Distirubtion is as important for creating uniformity.

Thanks Robusto, youve put my mind at ease. I am buying the parts I need as Im picking up the machine from Adelaide. Ill know tomorrow if its too small, I have just been looking for 3 days so I hope this one will work.

Mine is an exact fit, and its something of a pain.

I think its easier to tamp "round the clock" as Mal puts it, than to just keep pushing down with no room to manoeuvre.  Therell always be some fine coffee grounds pushed up the sides.

Its also impossible to give that final twist---the basket moves with the tamper.

A few mills undersize is too much, but 1.5-2 sound ideal, and that should also minimise chances of metal on metal.

Thanks Mal, I might have to check out getting a Greg Pullman tamper. Finding a tamper thats the right size is a nightmare, even in a city like Brisbane.

    Re: Stainless Tamper Sizes

    Hi Sam,

Ive got a Greg Pullman Tamper and its exactly 0.5mm smaller in O.D. than the I.D. of my standard Mokita baskets. Really easy to use and never a wet puck in sight, even when I dont pay particular attention. I think if you size the Tamper too much smaller than the basket(s), you will end up having to "tamp around the clock" to ensure the coffee is nicely packed down around the edges, not doing so runs the risk of "channelling" when the shot is being pulled....

    Mal.

    Stainless Tamper Sizes

I am just curious if anyone else uses a slightly smaller tamper than their basket. My tamper is about 1.5 - 2 mm smaller than the basket. I am not noticing that there is much of a difference. What have other people found? It still seems to tamp in nearly all the ground coffee. Should I get an "exact" fit tamper? :-?
