Re: Krups machines
hi there..
as Im new to this forum, and my question relates to Krups machines.. Id thought Id reply here, rather than posting a new subject..
I have a Krups machine, and although I think it makes a fine coffee.. (I dont have another machine to compare it to.. yet.. ) it has developed a leak.. around the coffee basket.,..
It *looks* like the rubber seal has failed.. and I was wondering if anyone here knows of a Krups service agent in Melbourne?
failing a service agent, Ill be up for a new machine..
sigh..
Paul.

Re: Krups machines
They found a local service agent in Adelaide. I reckon you could do it yourself if you know for sure its the seal. Ill find out the name of the place, but they were given the name by the Krups distrubutor as their Adelaide service agent. Apparently it was a real backyard operation, though. Im not sure who distributes Krups - a bit of Googling should get you the answer though. Im not sure if theirs was a Vivo: its about 1998 era, IIRC it was prior the Vivo and called an Espress Novo 3000 or something like that. The portafilter, I believe, was generic to various Krups units.

Re: Krups machines
DavidR, could you ask your folks how they managed to get the seal replaced for the Krups Vivo 880? Did they fix it themselves, get it fixed by someone? I think Ive got the same busted seal after 4-5 years of making two coffees a day on average.
I concur that if you know what you are doing, it makes a good espresso, better than 80% of the coffee shops out there.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Krups machines
I agree with AndyNZs comments.
My folks have an old late 1990s model (it sold for sub-$300 during the periodic $150-off promotions that Myers/DJs used to run with Krups) and its still going. They just had to have a seal replaced in the portafilter, which took lots of running around and cost nearly $50 (well, $5 for the part and $45 for labour - brickbats to the Krups service agent for not saying the part was user-replaceable).
It can make a surprisingly good coffee providing youve got a perfect grind. It took several goes to get the exact grind on Rio Coffees commerical grinder, and you need to vary the tamping as the coffee ages (my folks buy about 2 weeks supply).
I used to find frothing milk a breeze, but I seem to have lost the knack. It doesnt do long blacks as well as a proper machine, but it will outperform 80% of coffee shops. Its noticeably better than the $2000+ Saeco Royal that my office has.

Re: Krups machines
The new models out arent that bad, actually. Mark Prince of coffeegeek has had one to test for a while, and he reckons temp-wise, theyre not too shabby.
The pressurised basket is the same as the cheaper sunbeams and brevilles; that means you can chop them, or replace them with older krupss.
The only really limiting thing is the steam arm ... but just from having a quick look, I reckon you could replace it with a sunbeam part, for a froth-aider-free thing.
I lived with a thermoblock machine for 18 months, and if all you drink is milky coffee (flat white, latte, cappuccino etc), theyre not all that bad. They will get a bit limiting when it comes to just drinking espresso or being barista for a crowd, though.
Id say that theyre a nice beginner machine - though you might outgrow it quickly if you spend too long here. But then when you upgrade to a better machine/grinder combo ... im sure itd be great for holidays!

Re: Krups machines
Stay well clear of Krups, unless youre looking at buying a secondhand Vivo/Gusto/Primo (ie. the varients of Model 880) Im using a Vivo myself at the moment (waiting on getting my Brasilia Lady plumbed in), and I have to say - with temperature surfing and the right grind (plus solely using the doublebasket filter helps) it makes impressive espresso.
In regards to Krups in general, its a pity they chose to cater for the masses and tailor their entire line of machines for people who probably dont even know what good espresso tastes like - let alone how to make it, but I guess thats where the money is.

Re: Krups machines
Anyone concerned about the aluminum top on the Gaggia boilers? My wife ordered me to go out and buy a better machine because she was concerned about my health ;D so I bought a Bezzera.
I have taken it apart, and I can definately see some corrosion. Then again, I used sydneys hard tap water, affects could have been different had I used filtered water.

Re: Krups machines
If $400 is your limit, IMHO a Baby Gaggia is the way to go.

Re: Krups machines
In general, theyre low-priced, chuck out when they break, temperature unstable thermoblock junk.....Replace the "u" with an "a" and youll have the general idea ;DOriginally posted by Jim link=1146889781/0#0 date=1146889780Hi all,
Id like to know the current opinion on Krups machines.
Firstly, if youve used one or are currently using one is it good?
Secondly, whats the current perception of Krups in the marketplace? Is it a reputable brand? Are they perceived as reliable?
Thanks,
Jim.
Suggest you save a little and buy a decent boiler machine which will give you way better service and is repairable...
