  • Ascaso Dream?? any info?? New from Holland

    Hi Everyone,

I just arrived here from the netherlands and Im looking for a new machine for my apartment.

Someone on ebay is selling the Ascaso Dream machine and was wondering if anyone out there had one and if you can tell me if its worth the price tag. Its selling for $899, is this a good price?

How were your experiences with the machine and also can you recommend me looking at something else?

I have moved to Melbourne and went into the beanery ( I think its called ) in Brighton and found the same machine for $1199. So Im seriously thinking of taking up the ebay offer but id really like to hear from some of you who may have the machine.

Any suggestions and help would be most appreciated.

    With thanks,

    Doi!...

    Hi Koffie,

    Welcome to CoffeeSnobs [smiley=thumbsup.gif].

If I was you, Id drop one of our Site Sponsors a line...... found up on the top left hand side of the page. Seeing as how you are in Melbourne, 2muchcoffeeman comes to mind, the proprietor and operator of Talk Coffee. Chris will no doubt be able to help you out and if he cant, he will know who can. All the best,

    Mal.

Looks to nice to be any good, but that really depends on whether looks are what youre going for.

Ive seen it for $699USD, so Im guessing $900 aint toooo bad, but as Mal said - if you talked to Chris I reacon youll get a machine that makes a much better coffee for around the same price (new too!).

Id never trust a $900 machine with a "froth enhancer" as a steam wand.

        Koffie,

        Welcome to the site.

I would re-iterate the above advice.
Talk to Chris at Talk Coffee.
Tell him what you are after from your coffee making experience, give him a budget to work within and Im certain hell do you a good deal.

PLUS - hell stand behind the stuff he sells you (unlike ebay).

Ascaso is a massive company that had many brands, one of which was Innova. I think that they just decided to start selling stuff under the Ascaso name, so any reviews you can find of the Innova Dream should be of the same machine.

Theres a relatively good look at a similar machine here: http://www.coffeegeek.com/proreviews/firstlook/innovaarc

I struggle to see how it is not massively over-priced ... seems to just be a single-boiler machine thats nicely finished. The Rancilio Silvia at $750 will basically be the same thing, except that it has a better steam wand and the portafilter is a commercial 58mm, so you can swap different filter baskets into it. (Not sure if this has a commercial sized portafilter). The Sunbeam 6900 is probably also worth considering, but there have been a lot of reports that it is a very slow steamer. Still, at $600 and with local support centres, its a lot of machine for the money.

The nemox/imat/quaha machines seem to be basically the same thing as this machine, but significantly cheaper and probably uglier - its in the eye of the beholder! At the Ascaso price point, Id go and grab an ECM Botticelli II instead ... again, same class of machine, but ECM machines have superior finish to just about anything out there and they have a good distribution network over here. Also, their pumps are really quite. And you might even have the benefit of being able to buy from Talk Coffee, getting support from Chris Natoli, who is sensational.

Remember that whatever machine you get, it will perform like crap without freshly roasted decent coffee beans and a good grinder.

          Cheers,

          Luca

              Hey Koffie- Welcome!

              Some suggestions:

ECM Botticelli (same as the Asaco price point, vastly superior machine IMHO)
Entry level HX- e.g Expobar Semi-auto (pulsar)- Similar price point to the beanery Asaco ;D
Rancilio Sylvia (cheaper but pretty good value in a single boiler machine- just dont blow an element $$$$$$$ >)

Sales, service and support for all o them in Melbourne...and as Luca said, unlike the boffins on evilBay there will be someone on the other end of the phone if/when you need somebody....

Be sure to match whatever you buy with a quality grinder and fresh beans....

                Hi,

Thanks for everyones replys. I was not expecting such detail.
Hmm.. Its hard choice to make as i love my coffee.

Anyone know where i can get good organic beans in Melbourne?

As for the machine, Im starting to get very frustrated getting coffee out in the street. Sometimes i want to hand it back to them or take over from the service person... Does anyone else experience these feelings of impusive urges.

I must say however that I have been very impressed with the coffee culture here in Melbourne its very much like Munchen in germany. I dont know the english name of that city, i think its munic? or Muchic?.... Anyways... Very european with that black of italian style.. Im feeling more at home everyday.

                Best wishes,

                Koffie..

I think that the city name is Munich, aber mein Deutsch ist furchtbar!

I agree with you about the whole Melbourne coffee thing ... there are, maybe, four or five cafes that I would actually buy coffee at in the whole city.

Best advice when buying your machines is to try before you buy.

As far as coffee goes, I dont really worry too much about whether its organic - its hard enough to find good coffee full stop! But I live around the corner from Veneziano roastery and have drunk my way through all of their blends over time and I have to say that their organic blend is my favourite:

                    http://www.venezianocoffee.com.au/organic.html

Its what I like to pick up when Ive mismanaged my own roasting so that I need to buy coffee ...

St Ali is a cafe/roastery that is well and truly worthwhile checking out. Mark has a large range of single origin coffees, of which some are organic. You can check out some of whats in stock on his webpage, but he always has more stuff thats not up there that he is experimenting with. From memory, the Daterra Sweet Collection is organic, as is the Costa Rican La Lapa ... I think. The PNG Purosa is labelled as organic: http://www.stali.com.au/Coffee.html

The East Timor Maubesse can be very nice.

                    Cheers,

                    Luca

                      Welcome to CS and Melbourne!

There is so much coffee in Melbourne it can be difficult to find the right places/beans. I would highly recomend the following:

Batch espresso - Carslie st Balaclava (near st Kilda)
The Grocery - Fitzroy st St. Kilda
                      Gattaca - Carslie st
Cant go past Brunettis! - A Melbourne coffee institution.

But to buy beans - I use supreme coffee who have supreme, south and an organic fair trade blends. They roast every day and the blends are fantastic.

                      Enjoy!
