    Re: I killed my Silvia

Because I 1)break things and 2)cant fix things, Ive been neglecting my Faema Family and my vacpots and giving more attention to the unbreakable Aeropress. Even the paper filters last through many brews. Lately, Ive been bending the rules: using a coarser grind with higher temp, (90C), longer steeps and more coffee to make long blacks that arent the same as espresso or vacpot but very good. When the last Cona is broken and the Faema expires I may just keep on Aeropressing for a while. Mind you, if youve just got to have espresso, then I dont think the Aeropress will satisfy, but if you want a sweet strong brew thats clear and brings out the individual bean, the Aeropress can do that. The only other device I couldnt do without would be a Shark kettle for varying temperature. Im surprised theres only one kettle on the retail market like it.

    Does that help?

      CRAP...!
after giving Judy advise earlier, yesterady i overrode my timer (it had just switched off) to make a coffee and rushed off to work.
Left silvia running with steam switch on.

Can someone help me through the process of resetting the thermostat.
i cant go another morning without her.

      Cheers

Kong, switch off your machine and unplug it- then take the top off, and you will see that there are 3 thermostats inside on the boiler.  One has a red button on it--its the "high limit trip" thermostat (look between the terminals).  I think its the one on the front of the boiler if I remember correctly.  VERY CAREFULLY push it back in with the tip of a screwdriver.  They break off easily, and you dont want to have to replace the boiler $$$$$$$.

        Good luck!

No need to remove the connectors Kong- Youll be able to reset the little red one with the tip of a small screwdriver...

              OPERATION complete...! thanx 2mcm.
ill just point out, even though it is obvious once you have a good look.
That is NOT the red button on the top thermostat you can see in the photo (not that 2mcm said it was). The actual button is (as 2mcm mentioned) on the FRONT thermostat, under the terminal connector with the black wire.
Just thought id point this out for anyone that is a little technically challenged like me.

Is that little thing you reset sposed to have popped out a bit like a powerboard reset button where it "clicks " back in place?
whats longest time Silvia can be left unattended?

                      Re: I killed my Silvia

that doesnt sound good, I was told it would take minimum 18mins to bring temp up but not to proper brewing temp. I havent been able to use her since Friday morning as I injured myself walking down stairs at a shopping centre and totally stuff ed on my right side, so my partner in crime been learning to make coffee today, (I cant tamp at all) I watched her do the shot and it went normal, turned on steam switch came back a few minutes later and she when to purge the steam of water and nothing comes out. Since then its not putting out hot water at all. Weve taken top cover off and tried resetting that switch and Im thinking it s not heating up...
Can things get any worse, going potty is painful(right arm not working thing) constant pain(cant work) and now Silvias not working...

                      Someone shoot me now

                          Sullo,

To help the gurus here can you let them know if all others functions work ok. i.e can you still run water thru the group and the steam wand, just not hot water?

If the element is blown I believe there is a continuity check that can be done (with it unplugged). I remember a post about it a while back where you check the resistance across the element. High/infinite resistance means blown element.

                            Re: I killed my Silvia

water comes out group head with switch one, water comes thru steam wand on switch two with valve open, but no heat so nothing on third option...
just no heat... thinking shes gone out in sympathy with me or something.

                            *insert wailing here*

                              Sullo,

I believe the Silvia has a thermal cutout.... if the boiler gets too hot it cuts power to the element.

I think it has to be manually reset and is one of three "thermostats" on the boiler.... I assume with a little reset button.

You would need to remove the lid (with power off of course :) and check it out.

                              See:

                              Good luck!!
