Re: single boiler machines
No. Dont go there, Robusto. Relax. We know corruption of the language is a sore point with you. Count to 10.... one, two, three....four........five............six.......... ............seven................................. ...........
All better.

Re: single boiler machines
I discovered what a spelling snob I was when I gave up my 20 year accounting career to study commercial cookery last year. It has to be said that chefs who teach cooking dont have spelling as a job requirement. My first teacher (who would be known to a lot of people in food circles) was a poor speller, and I would correct his spelling for him on the basis that he was teaching a lot of teenage apprentices incorrectly. Then I realised that while I could spell all the fancy terminology, Id only ever read the words and had no idea how to pronounce a lot of the French terms - very embarassing. So every time Id correct him he would come back at my pronounciation. I now work for him and while my pronounciation has improved out of sight, the same cant be said for his spelling.....
Brett, Ive used Viviane as my "net-name" for three years now, mostly in rpgs and youre only the second person to guess where it came from. Viviane (Lady of the Lake, King Arthurs aunt and Lancelots mother) would probably say that as long as you are understood it matters not how you make yourself heard. On the other hand the language has changed so much sincer her day that she wouldnt follow this conversation anyway. She wouldnt have even heard of coffee, poor woman.

Re: single boiler machines
Theres always been so called high and low language- language of beauty and language of use. An interesting thing is that language is a tool to be used and most people enjoy playing with it.Originally posted by frad link=1154985982/0#13 date=1156328998Im with you Brett, we just have to worry when the vehicle gets too trashed to express the finer things.
Like fully sick stuff, you know?
I think the english language takes aprox 800 years to become unrecognzable. (Someone from the 1200s wouldnt understand us)
L8ter,
Rob
I realised what a snob I had become when I was offended by an American journalist using finessed to describe how a guitarist was working subtlely to produce a particular tone. My thinking was the typical Aussie, Bloody Americans!
Guess what? While reading Jane Austin I found her using the exact word. So who was the pedant in that case?
Have to laugh at fully sick! Those kids will be responsible parents one day- funny isnt it?

Sorry all for the sermon- by the way todays coffee was smooth sweet and rich.

Re: single boiler machines
Yeah, sorry Viviane about the full stops! My Dad is a cool guy but a good old fashioned pedant. I love good English, can be at times an academic snob, but try not to worship the vehicle but what is expressed in it.
Im also aware that English, like any language, is not static. Even the French with their language academy watchdog havent kept their language pure. The language we have has evolved into what it is and no matter how much we bemoan changes to it, all living things change. The next generation will complain about the generation after it.
And come to think of it, I thought the forum was about coffee!
(Viviane- from Arthurian legends?)
All the best to all

Not "laid back" but sloppy.Originally posted by Viviane link=1154985982/0#10 date=1156313627English has become very laid back since the internet took off.
I moderate another board and even some English posters struggle to write correctly.
For the first couple of years I would correct the worst of it but its become too much for me now.
Unless a stand is taken somehow, I fear some of us are fighting a losing battle.
By the way, I like this forum because I can write in "strine" and be understood.
Much more relaxing.

The reason is both humorous and pathetic- my mother still talks of Dad (a teacher) correcting her grammatical and spelling mistakes in the love letters she sent to him!
Be assured, many people Ive corresponded to use a lot of shortcuts in their notes and thoughts.

Ron, I will notice punctuation and spelling errors, though Im used to the fact that written English has become very laid back since the internet took off. I particularly notice it in my sons school assignments - we went through a stage of me helping him rewrite them into "correct" English. He tells me that his teachers are a lot more tolerant of internet-speak than I am. Makes me fear for the future of the modern world.....
Brett, and your mother still married your dad???? He must be a pretty cool bloke apart from that. Have to say, though, I was disappointed - you put three full stops in your post. Youre letting your team down. :P

love the reply viviane- was going to mention said poet, but thought would look like mega snob prat with delusions of grandeur!
point taken, still surprised its an issue- for me i guess its just a habit from making notes etc
brett
only problem is that now im suffering from disconnectedness from serious double spacing sydrome (SDSS- have to add that to ADHD etc)

Re: single boiler machines
telemaster, I think the point about full stops was that your first post in this thread was difficult to read. Relax all you like - if you can double space between your points, as in your last post, then you can give e.e. cummings a run for his money and we can happily read and follow your line of thinking

Re: single boiler machines
fullstops!
ah the attack of the pedants- after teaching kids all day i like to relax
certainly not intended to offend, were just all different?
i think youll just have to cope
what is important is i love coffee
for david- to each his own- i guess for me i find the ecm easier than the silvia
the ecm boiler is only 1/3 larger and the temp stability is more related to the deadband of the thermostat- quite wide on most machines, probably no diff between sivlia and ecm
after doing thermocouple measurements i found that the temp at the beginning of the new cycle (just after light goes off) is pretty much what id want on the ecm, so i run water into cups, or use the hot water through steam arm to get the boiler light on
-whereas friends have this definite temperature surf thing with silvias- im sure youve read about it- same old get boiler cycle going, then count down because the boiler temp is too high, then also issue of the over pressure valve being set a bit high
i think they are all great but all are compromises- frankly ive been disappointed with the small hx millenium at work- so little steam (but has the same steam tip ive now got on the botticelli)- compared to the bezzera i was lucky enough to be given , its a bit sad
i find it easy to estimate where the temp will be on the ecmsingle boiler- on the e61 machines you still have do the hx flush to cool the group head down and often there is still an element of counting - see:
http://www.home-barista.com/hx-love.html
also i started a new thread to discuss this so as not to be disagreeing with you- had strange (read negative) experience on coffeegeek where i offered an opinion and was shot down with a string of opinions all quoting telemaster said in mutually congratulatory tones suggesting i wasnt a seasoned veteran because i didnt talk in terms of low temp=sour, high temp=bitter - thought id save you that
all the best
