Two weeks ago, before finding coffeesnobs: Sunbeam Ristretto & DeLonghi KG100

          Since finding coffeesnobs:
          - Green bean starter pack
          - Bought a factory 2nd Breville popper last week
          - Picked up a 3-year old Gaggia Classic yesterday
          - Being shipped a Gaggia MDF this week
          - Placed orders for a Pullman tamper + LM baskets, blind filter + cleaner + new spout
          - Sold my old kit to a mate

Not a bad upgrade for around $400

I have a Gaggio Cubika that I received about a month ago as a gift. I read somewhere that one of the first things to do with these things (or any coffee machine for that matter) is throw away the plastic tamper that comes with it. I must admit that I viewed this advice with a little scepticism, however I bought a new tamper the other day, and I have to say its made a huge difference. Dont even think twice about it.

Having never owned anything other than a plunger and a cafeteria before, and the ubiquitous jar of Nescafe, I can say that really starting to enjoy my coffee, and so is my wife, who puts in her request each morning. Due to my limited experience its hard for me to judge how my coffee skills are going, but Im think Im starting to figure it all out - for the first time today I actually took the time to compare a few different grinds and what the different results were. I found by the end of the experiment my coffee had improved by a substantial margin.

The Cubika is ok for what it is, still coming to grips with its idiosyncrasies, I can get what appears to be a decent coffee out of it but only if Im co-ordinated and methodical. I think its good and bad points have been pointed out elsewhere on this site. If nothing else its made me appreciate the value in the more expensive and capable machines.

So anyway, other than the machine and the tamper, and a stainless steel jug for frothing milk, I just bought a Sunbeam EM0480, but thats a story in itself and the means by which I found this forum.

I stated with plungers for years and then went stove top. I then bought with awards points a little Sunbeam Ristretto with boiler. I then moved up to the EM6900 and by getting Sunbeam at their weakest (Christmas) I convinced them that the steam was poor and no questions asked they sent me a week later a new EM6910 - so extra PF, baskets etc. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot on that machine. I then got a spot of good fortune when a mate of a mate was selling his little business that wasnt a coffee business, but he loved coffee it seems, and had groups of 20-30 business people around every couple of weeks. He had a Faema Due 2 Group Commercial in fastastic condition and backflushed regularly with chemical cleaner. What could I do...$300 later and a small hernia (it weighs 75kg dry) it was in the kitchen and with a new water filter and new seals and shower screens (for a grand total of about $70) and a static boiler flush out (ie not using chemical but just fresh water and the bung on the bottom of the boiler) the things is a menace! I love it. My wife loves it! My kids love it....its a living thing on the bench.

Interestingly if you grind, dose and tamp properly the espressos are truly excellent, but if you go haywire and dont take your time and say underdose it will still produce very very good coffee...its a very forgiving baby. I love the heat off the thing....we warm plates and cups on the large hearing area on top. The steaming power and volume is unstoppable. I can easily steam at one go a litre or more in an enormous stainless jug and serve up the whole family!

                  All the best.

                  Cheers

But if you win Lotto be sure to give me the numbers.

[On topic] I tried mine out (obviously) and am very pleased with it. [/On topic]

Was just browsing on the weekend and happened to see the new Silvia with PID that 2muchcoffeeman was selling. I had my eye on one a few weeks ago but my non coffee drinking wife wasnt impressed with the price. Anyway, I must have done something right since then as she turned around to me and said buy it.
So now Im just (im)patiently waiting for it to arrive, hopefully should have it by the weekend. Cant wait.

Be patient Gar ! remember that if you get the gear Friday the weekends a wipeout.

Just received my Coffee Labs tamper, to replace the insult provided with the Vibiemme.

After a week of playing with the new toys I reckon the results are pretty good, tamper makes a huge difference though.

Domobar steam is tremendous, just needs a little skill to control, 300ml in 8 seconds, Wow!!

                          its all your fault
Looking around the net I saw a delonghi for sale on impulse bought it . Then I found your site and realised I shouldnt have done that so I now have a Gaggia classic and its great but now Ive got to have a grinder (dont now which one yet) and a pullman tamper then Ill have to learn how to roast and all I wanted was a good cup of coffee........... But its going to be great learning about all this and the rewards are so nice to drink

I have a new machine I won a Faema E98 S1 Compact which Im very happy about, its a fully manual machine works a little different to my old Sunbeam EM6910 which I still have. Happy with the new machine so far, handling it quite well has not taking to long to adjust.

Have been a bit of a bean brain ever since I can remember. My best experience so far was pulling consistent shots from a 1993 Krupp manual (as they were back then) and sadly, have been on a diet of instant (spits) for the last 9 years.......but Im back from the brink, wherever that might be. I know it certainly didnt taste very good!
Just won (read bought) a Vibiemme Domobar Levetta on evilbay and now will wait very very very impatiently. Now I have to get a reasonable grinder and am thinking of an Iberital Challenge doserless. Any grinder thoughts on that would be appreciated.
Then, Gents, start your engines! (Very politically incorrect, I know). Anybody know where I can d/l a manual for the Vibiemme?

                              Thanks.
