Re: Tamper #1000 - for free!

Can someone please tell me whether Gregs LM basket will fit my Sunbeam 6900?
Greg reckons it should, but I need to be sure before I can order my new tamper from him and if it fits, I dont have to send him my present basket.

Has anyone else gone through the same excersise maybe?

    Thanks in advance

      Hi Dick,

If you have access to an Internal Micrometer or a set of Dial Vernier Callipers, then you could measure the Internal Diameter of your baskets(s) in two directions displaced by 90 degrees just inside the Lip of the Basket. If you dont feel comfortable doing this yourself, take the basket to a nearby engineering workshop and ask the owner if he/she wouldnt mind doing this for you..... Im sure they wouldnt mind, then you can send the info off to Greg and await your wonderful work of art to arrive ,

      Mal.

            Greg...

Does that mean I have to order a Jarrah handle with a (flat?) base????

              Greg,

I have been following this thread since you started it, very generous offer and a great product.

Anyway, couldnt resist the temptation any longer, so broke the lock and unscrewed it and had a look.

My only criticism about any aspect of the whole process of ordering, receiving and using my wonderful tamper is...you didnt stamp the numbers in a straight line!

But at least I know my number now.

                Rowdee,

Apart from the wonderful craftsmanship, what further proof do you need that yours is a "one-off" ;D,

                Mal.

                  Good one Mal,

In fact it looks like the hammer slipped off the number punch so he had to repeat it, which means I have a slight shadow on the last number.

He might have been high on coffee or ...

What happens if everyone decided to do that? then it becomes this big bid/auction sort of thing, so people start of with like $100 then another for $250 etc. then greg would make quite alot of money for one tamper!

Should I order yet or wait another week?? Jarrah or Redgum? Itll be flat, for sure!
Order a new LM basket for my Sunbeam 6900 or send Greg my present basket.
My 6900 is in for repairs at the moment, should be back here in Melbourne on Tuesday.
Ive got a feeling to wait a few more days and test my machine first!
                        Regards,

                        Dick

                          Whats wrong with it?

Poor sunbeam. They cant be making any money off the 6900s.

                          Cheers,

                          Luca

Well its THEIR reputation which is being damaged!

But I wonder how many 6900 purchasers think this is the best they can get in a "domestic" machine.... and have become totally disillusioned with making espresso at home... How many future Coffee Snobs have been turned off for life- or at least a long time?

I remember many, many years ago I bought my first espresso machine - a Krups. It cost an arm and a leg....

I knew little about technique in those days (no resources available like CS) and the shops knew knothing about them either (unlike our site sponsors).

Needless to say it made cr@p coffee.... and I figured that was as good as it gets (unless you bought a $9000+ real machine) The machine was unreliable (as someone said - replace the "u" in the name with an "a" and you have it about right).... :

So I lost interest and it found its way to the back of the cupboard and I went back to perc coffee as I recall.

I wonder what effect the Sunbeam 6900s are having - Id be surprised if it is not a similar one.

The biggest problem was Wet Steam, I could have the steam on for 40 seconds and there was still water coming out the wand. Also the seal started to go!.

It makes very could espresso I think, together with Alan Frews coffee, I have been very happy with the espresso quality.

Not at all. If the 1000th order doesnt match the base thats so stamped, itll have to be machined off and stamped onto another base!

"My only criticism about any aspect of the whole process of ordering, receiving and using my wonderful tamper is...you didnt stamp the numbers in a straight line!"

Theyre really only for my reference. All stamped with hand punches. Ive thought about making the numbers more obvious but would need to make sure theyre always straight, which I dont have a setup for yet. Also it may detract from the otherwise clean lines on the tamper.

"In fact it looks like the hammer slipped off the number punch so he had to repeat it, which means I have a slight shadow on the last number."

May have been on a soft surface when it got stamped. This sometimes causes the base to push into the soft undersurface and then recoil and hit the punch a second time.
