    Re: PVC Knockbox

Mine seems to be deep enough not to spill the grounds on the bench - I set it back a fair way into the pipe.

      Re: PVC Knockbox

I think I have the invidious distinction of having possibly the ugliest, most unedifying knock box.

It was supposed to be a prototype -- but ended up being the one and only.

To see how materials would stand up to knocks, I got an old pool chemical container, and cut off the screw top so I could utilise the even-sided bottom half.

It is very thin plastic, complete with the ugly original label. Cut out a scallop in the front.

Drilled, or should I say, roughly cut with a blade, two holes to take the knocker. From memory, it was 18mm aluminium tube. Slipped an old piece of used black plastic irrigation hose over that to protect the portafilter and basket. Was a nice, tight fit.

Hey presto, it worked. So well I never bothered to refine it into something more befitting my wifes kitchen. Just as well it lives under the sink next to the rubbish bin.

My God but its ugly. But is big, and deep. ANd by the time it fills up, the pucks are a green colour like rotten oranges----with the smokey rot to match.

Hope the worms dont get too high on them.

So you do your composting indoors Robusto?

I got a full sized knocker tube I found on council cleanup day. Dont think Ill ever fill it up. Dump the pucks out into whatever tree looks like it deserves it the most. Just have to remember to water them...

          Re: PVC Knockbox

I followed advice of others and made a nice knock box out of PVC.  Added no more gaps to base to reduce likelihood of scratching bench.

            Re: PVC Knockbox

I was using an old cast iron pot with a length of broom handle. It had rubber mesh on its base, which retained water after washing and caused rust stains on the bench

              Re: PVC Knockbox

I bought a cheap black plastic bin from Kmart. Cut the front down a bit so its lowered. Then cut two holes in the sides and stuck a peice of brrom handle (spray painted black) through the bin. Cost me around $4, looks and acts the part perfectly.

                  Re: PVC Knockbox

I just use a chopstick and bang it over the bin. I dont really see the point of a knockbox at home. Its just one more thing to clean and you would want to clean it often cos rancid coffee is horrendous.
