Re: PVC Knockbox
I just use a chopstick and bang it over the bin. I dont really see the point of a knockbox at home. Its just one more thing to clean and you would want to clean it often cos rancid coffee is horrendous.

Re: PVC Knockbox
I bought a cheap black plastic bin from Kmart. Cut the front down a bit so its lowered. Then cut two holes in the sides and stuck a peice of brrom handle (spray painted black) through the bin. Cost me around $4, looks and acts the part perfectly.

Re: PVC Knockbox
I was using an old cast iron pot with a length of broom handle. It had rubber mesh on its base, which retained water after washing and caused rust stains on the bench

Re: PVC Knockbox
I followed advice of others and made a nice knock box out of PVC. Added no more gaps to base to reduce likelihood of scratching bench.

Re: PVC Knockbox
So you do your composting indoors Robusto?
I got a full sized knocker tube I found on council cleanup day. Dont think Ill ever fill it up. Dump the pucks out into whatever tree looks like it deserves it the most. Just have to remember to water them...

Re: PVC Knockbox
I think I have the invidious distinction of having possibly the ugliest, most unedifying knock box.
It was supposed to be a prototype -- but ended up being the one and only.
To see how materials would stand up to knocks, I got an old pool chemical container, and cut off the screw top so I could utilise the even-sided bottom half.
It is very thin plastic, complete with the ugly original label. Cut out a scallop in the front.
Drilled, or should I say, roughly cut with a blade, two holes to take the knocker. From memory, it was 18mm aluminium tube. Slipped an old piece of used black plastic irrigation hose over that to protect the portafilter and basket. Was a nice, tight fit.
Hey presto, it worked. So well I never bothered to refine it into something more befitting my wifes kitchen. Just as well it lives under the sink next to the rubbish bin.
My God but its ugly. But is big, and deep. ANd by the time it fills up, the pucks are a green colour like rotten oranges----with the smokey rot to match.
Hope the worms dont get too high on them.

Re: PVC Knockbox
Mine seems to be deep enough not to spill the grounds on the bench - I set it back a fair way into the pipe.

Re: PVC Knockbox
Cut a piece of garden hose to cover over what you are knocking onto. Our work one has a coach bolt and the hose is great. It just needs to be replaced every so often as it wears where you hit the portafiller (well, in a relatively busy cafe it does!).
And you can buy that sticky rubber matting at Woolies or just about anywhere. I think Ive even seen it in the Crazy Prices type stores. And use that for putting your knock box on if you dont like it slipping round your bench!

Re: PVC Knockbox
Im not having any movement problems (maybe I grab it - dont remember) but the base doesnt scratch anything - flat PCV cap, quite smooth. If it slides at all I will just add some stick-on rubber feet (also from bunnings).

Re: PVC Knockbox
I saw one of these on another site about a year ago (cannot find the article/post now).
I recall that the person who made it, spent a little extra and got some black insulation tubing (like the stuff that goes around pipes) to put on the dowel, and some kind of covering for the bottom to make it non-slip, non-marking. I think it took the cost up to around $10 US.
Still a good deal. Wish I could find it though.

Yeah im using the exact same system minus the bar in the middle (havent got around to installing it yet).
Empty it every day or day and a half depending on amount of coffees made.
Doesnt do too bad a job for $4.

Re: PVC Knockbox
Hey I might have to go visit Bunnings myself - nice idea. Ive been using the edge of my garbage bin. Does it have any type of rubber in it to stop it sliding across the bench, or from scratching it?
Ive already put a large scratch in the bench from cleaning the coffee machine.

Re: PVC Knockbox
OOOh very nice Grendel. May have to construct one myself. I was hinting at OG to get me the lovely knockbox that I saw at the coffee suppliers last week.
This may be a good thing to make while I save up the $$$
