Re: Pics of my EM6910 with Naked PF

I got it for the fault diagnosis.
The first shot through was messy.
    Must have channeled.
One hole in the filter near the edge, did its own thing and shot some fluid at a very acute angle; more sideways than down.

Great shots Marc (coffee and photos ;D)

The naked PF is definitely a handy diagnostic tool and to watch that lovely golden thread slide its way down into the glass below is a sight to behold. Might have to think about getting one of these for myself

        Mal.

          Ahh, good question...

I used an existing PF that I had due to a returned machine been completely replaced (Sunbeam ask you to keep accessories when packing and returning the machine) so I grabed a Hole Saw (well, I friend did it for me), removed the spout and drilled. I then used a drill and a dremil to smooth out the burrs that were created from the hole Saw. Wahla... a Naked PF... simple as!

Sunbeam could do better I believe. A dead machine away for weeks/months on a promise is not good enough. There is no excuse for no coffee...You should have demanded and received a loan machine :-?

I happened to see a nice naked PF sitting on the shelf of Di Bartolis the other day when I was there..might have to get one myself.    Quite reasonably priced and well finished too. Im sure if you gave Renzo a call he could fill you in on price etc....

Dick- I think that I will get one only from this batch...As I understand, 30 are coming in and theyre all earmarked for Michels patisserie as decaf grinders- I believe that Im allowed to steal one. You are welcome to put first dibs on it if you wish.

Im planning on having a play with it for a week but then it will be for sale at a discount. This grinder will RRP at $630...which is a heap under the $1049 of the mini-e...

I suspect that the K3 touch and the Macap MC4 are gonna kick some serious mini-e culo

It was a good price and nicely finished.

Re: Pics of my EM6910 with Naked PF

Ive always thought of a macchiato as an espresso with a drop of milk, preferably frothed.

It literally means (from the Italian) "stained". That is, a black brew which has a stain on it -- the white drop of milk.

What is in contention is the size of the stain. Again, Ie always believed it to be no more than a drop or two -- enough to discolour and alter the taste.

                            Hi again Steven

A naked pf is the portafilter (which holds the basket of coffee grounds) with the bottom cut out so if you look underneath (when fitted to the group) you can see the bottom of the basket which is - naked!

The idea is to watch the coffee being extracted.... if it flows evenly from all over the bottom of the basket.... GREAT... you have the tamp nice and even and all is well.

If you get little "squirts" of coffee coming from different places over the bottom of the basket, or all the flow is from one side - you have a problem. The squirts is channelling and the one sided is uneven tamping..... either way you need to improve your tamping technique if that happens.

                                Steven,

Firstly what type of machine have you got? The site sponsors (some of who are in Victoria) might be able to help you out, but it depends what type of machine it is.

If it is something like a Sunbeam, then you need to purchase a replacement PF from Sunbeam and then cut the hole yourself (several people have done this with a hole saw). If it is a standard PF then there are bottomless or naked PFs for these. Also CoffeeParts (who provide excellent service and fast shipment) have these available for certain brands.... but knowing the brand is the first step.
