Ive decided to leave it for now, it will be fine. The machine is going in for a service soon so the service man can do it for me when he replaces all the gaskets etc and puts on the sylvia wand.

    I dont know if it will work, but with cimbali machines we do the following;
You will loose the filter, but save the screw,
-bent the filter down on both sides,
-take a pare off pliers and begin turning the filter.
    - the screw will undo together with the filter because the filter will coill around and hold the screw when you turn it.
You only have to replace the filter.
This works with cimbali machines, I used it a lot
    Cheers
    lots off succes
    Tony

    Hi,

So Lucinda, have you managed to get that bloody shower screen off?

    Cheers,

Ta, I usually do underscrew so I dont know what I did wrong. Will go for the olive oil trick.

If I cannot get the bloody thing off I will wait until it goes in for a service in the next few weeks.

A cotton ball soaked in olive oil should sit in place nicely.

Wd40 might be great around the workshop, but Id keep it away from the kitchen, and definitely would not spray it on a coffee machine.

Id either try tapping it as Gregs link suggests... or, heres another tip.

Olive oil is absolutely food safe-- as we know. But but rather viscous.

Heat some to thin it down, and pour a little onto the screw while the machine is upside down. Find a way to let it pool there and penetrate.

Lucinda, maybe if you backflash the machine it will remove the oils from around the screw. If you need more leverage to unscrew you can grip the neck of the stubby screwdriver with a "visegrip" or some similar devise. One hand pushing the screwdriver into the screw head and the other turning it anticlockwise. If you stand the machine upside down it will help.
From my experience it is better to under tighten on these machines.
    Good luck

hmmmm the rugby player guy sounds like fun maybe I could sweettalk one of the canterbury crusaders to paying me a visit ;D

Am going to get the wee screw driver and the WD40 and have a go at that.

    Ola,

How bout some WD40? How long has it been since the last shower removal?

Maybe a huge rugby playing guy could help you, they are said to be strong

    Cheers,
    dsc.
    WD40 isnt nice stuff!
I bought a very short stubby screwdriver- whole thing is about 6cm long. I put my left forearm over the top of the machine and squeeze my arms together as i undo the screw. Seems to be a problem both of the coffee oils and metal expanding under heat. The shorter driver was very useful.

My old Gaggia Deluxe had this happen twice having to put it in the shop for repair... One thing I hate about Gaggia machines is this! Hope you get it off Lucinda.

Lucinda, make sure the machine is warm. Not hot, that will expand the metal in the screw and make it harder to remove, but just warm enough to loosen the coffee oils that will be gunking it up.

More than likely I over tightened it last time I cleaned it and put it back on, but I went to clean it this morning and the blasted thing will not loosen.
