Thanks Mel! I was initially a little concerned at time of order as to how well the image would turn out (I did supply it to them in vector format, which possibly helped....ie less worry of jaggies in the conversion process from BMP/JPG etc to vector), but the engraver Pullman uses really did a top-notch job

    Im stoked.

    Caff.

Received my Pullman Barista yesterday...... and what can I say!

    [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

Ive included the feedback I left on Gregs website today, along with a photo of my new.... I want to say toy here, but somehow that word doesnt do it justice.

Ill go with practical piece of artisan craftsmanship instead

My tamper order was always going to be more of a challenge than the norm. A Barista model, in stealth black, 316 s/s base, and with custom etching (both text and image). Yet it was still something that was handled with ease by the good folks at Pullman.

Every step of the process, from ordering online to the way my tamper came packaged, to the tamper itself was of as high a professional standard as any Ive seen in my years of online purchasing. Robin was always very quick to respond to my email enquiries during the sales process, and kept me very well informed as to how the order was progressing. The tamper arrived within the estimated timeframe, even with a minor mess-up on the engravers behalf. The Pullman staff (and Robin in particular) really did bend over backwards to make sure I was looked after.

Being no stranger to quality tampers, having used my beloved Reg Barber for the last ten years, I was still completely blown away by the quality of my Barista Tamper when I received it. Every aspect of design has been clearly well thought-out, and is backed up by a fit and finish that is truly exemplary. Hand-feel, weight, adjustability, and quality of fit to the matched Synesso baskets have already made a very noticeable impact on the quality of my shot extraction. My Reg now sits on my shelf. Its done well over the last ten years, but hes now been upstaged by the new kid in town.

Great work guys. I couldnt be happier.

    Cheers,

    Dan

Last saturday I forgot to take my barista to work and had to borrow an espro for the day. All I can say is that I really missed my pullman and I wont be forgetting it again any time soon.

an awesome piece of kit and more than worth the money
Im conscious theyre not the cheapest tampers in the world (they dont aim to be either) but manufacturing in Australia full-stop isnt a cheap exercise, let alone at the standards we impose. Its really the only way to get the level of quality we want though. So its good to read that sort of feedback from someone whos got one.

JavaB and I, and all the other Aussie craftsmen involved in producing your tamper say, "thank you"!

Got my Pullman barista in Argent today and couldnt wait to get it home... so instead too it to my friendly cafe where I am allowed to make my own coffees... an awesome piece of kit and more than worth the money. Will post more feedback as I get to grips (pun intended) with it at home.

What a great piece of engineering/art - a pleasure to use. Looking at/using it is on par with enjoying the coffee run through my naked portafilter.

I saw one at Tobys Estate, Chippendale and bought it on the spot.

Only after did I find out that I could have bought it custom-sized.

Fortunately after viewing options on website - it was the one I would have chosen anyway - Jarrah handle, flat base. Also I had an assortment of basket quite a number were a perfect fit.

    Perhaps the tamper found me.

Have been using a Pullman Deluxe Tamper for the last year or so - looks every bit as good as the day I got it.

Nice job Greg! Its great to be able to support an Australian product!

Just an observation re baskets in general:

Because they are pressings, they tend to adopt non-uniform shapes once released from the die.

I measured every 2-shot basket I could get my hands on with a digital caliper, including the brand-new Synesso basket I bought with my checkerboard deluxe tamper and found a variance of as much as .09mm between measurements at different points on the circumference.
Sounds about right Garg. Weve come across many factory basket that are double that difference, which is one reason we moved to the Synesso units some time ago as they are almost perfectly round. Pretty hard to supply a fitted tamper when it only fits at certain points!

I guess this is why my tamper (diameter 58.66mm) is slightly looser in the new Synesso basket (min. 59.04mm) than in my Gaggia basket (min. 58.87mm). At this level of tolerance, I dont believe theres any difference in performance of the tamper itself.
Hi Gargravarr and welcome to CS! With that sort of attention to the diameter of baskets and tamper, youve come to the right place.

Im just wondering if people pay anywhere near as much attention to the bean. Have you?

After that, you just have to make your own assessment of the performance of the basket itself. My experience is that the Gaggia basket gives me a much better-textured espresso, but that might be down to the machine or the operator.

Went down to Veneziano today to get some cups and while there, I picked up an Espro Tamper. They are beautiful, but I realised they just felt cold!!! Without even trying to tamp with one, I realised how much I love the wood in my Pullman Tamper. It just feels right when you pick it up.

Thanks Mal, yes its a stunning wood. The pic below from that site is probably the best representation of the density of the wood - relatively few almost circular pores but the rest of it basically a solid material.

Love the new timber you have available for handles Greg 8-)..... As with the rest of your collection leaves everything else seriously wanting. Very intriguing timber though..... Heres a link to some more info on "Wenge" which like some very nice beans, originates from Africa..... :
