2:  I usually have to wait until my birthday (365 days) .. And then I usually put my foot in my mouth and spoil what ever chance I had.

Re: She just doesnt get it - Tampers

You can have my rosewood tamper if youre keen – I got my pullman today. The rosewood is pretty fine as far as Im concerned, but the pullman is fit to the basket which is extra nice, and makes it a lot easier for me to get a level tamp (I can prove all sorts of things about parallel lines, but actually telling if something is without help? Yeah, way out of my league).

              PM me if youre interested.

P.s: Anyone from Pullman Tamper reading this, when are you going to do a little financial crisis sale so we all can get a decent tamper  ;D
Ha! As soon as the smelters drop the price of stainless steel and our suppliers are prepared to work for peanuts! Unfortunately making a Pullman Tamper here in Australia is a pretty manual and expensive process, its not just a matter of pushing a button in China to turn out a million for a dollar each and pay the worker $1 per hour; and to get good workmanship we have to pay good money.

It can be hard to justify that much on a tamper purely from showing SWMBO just a photo; but I almost guarantee shell start to appreciate the difference if she can pick one up and hold one. From a photo there may not appear to be a big difference between one of ours and tampers from some other manufacturers, but on closer inspection the workmanship, the size and the finish should speak for themselves. Materials can differ markedly too, so in 10 years time the Pullman will be still as good as new (barring marks from normal use) where others may be rusting, chipping, corroding or showing various other forms of decay.

Its more expensive to do it properly and the benefits arent always apparent when its sitting there shinily on the shelf, so many choose to take the cheaper path and bigger profits; but down the track it becomes obvious why we choose the higher quality path. For example:

                    Pullman (L)

I havent identified who makes these other tampers because Im not interested in pulling down others who still make a good product in their own right; but simply to point out there ARE differences with a Pullman and the reasons why we do things the way we do. I should mention though that these alternative units arent the $25 cheapies - theyre amongst the most popular high-end tampers in the world in the $70+ range.

Compared to a real cheapie? I guess this is one way of looking at it. A $5 hammer from the reject shop and a $200 unit from a premium tool shop will both knock nails into wood, but the cheap one wont be as comfortable, well-balanced or as nice to use as the expensive one. Down the track the handle will split, the head will work loose and within a few years itll end up in the bin and youll shell out for another one. It will take many many years of cheap hammers before you recover the cost of the expensive one, if ever you do, but each time you use that expensive one youll appreciate what a well-made tool it is, it will be a joy to use and the job will be that much simpler and smoother to accomplish.

Whether those things are important to you you have to answer for yourself; but if you get the opportunity please try to physically handle one of our tampers if you can and a lot of this should suddenly become clearer. A number of sponsors sell our tampers and would be more than happy to assist in this regard - the full list of resellers can be found at http://www.coffeetamper.com.au/resellers.html if youd like to find a local.

                    Good luck!
                    Greg

Re: She just doesnt get it - Tampers

That may be so Mr. Pullman, but at my $0 price Ill sell BILLIONS. BWAHAHAHA.

More seriously, I put my word behind Pullman tampers. I havent tried others admittedly, but I cant imagine any improvements beyond aesthetic, and at that stage its a personal choice. So for those with a bit of cash burning in their pocket, go for it.

                      Thanks again Greg.

Just to back up Gregs example, I still have some of my fathers tools.
I even have his electric drill which must be over 30 years old now.
Ive gone through 2 cordless ones myself and he used to be a builder so it got a lot of use before I inherited it.

Ill certainly back up what Greg says above,

I tried a range of tampers before finding Gregs and one of those cost me $45.00, not that cheap really but after buying my first Pullman Tamper, the others were stashed away somewhere (I cant remember where exactly ) and Ive never used anything else since. That was quite a few years ago and that Tamper still looks great and works as designed... My eldest son is using it with his hardware now and is as equally impressed with it as I first was.

Im not knocking the RB and CL tampers out there, I havent used their designs so am unable to comment. In any event, I would always try to buy genuine Aussie designed and made products before something from overseas, so long as the quality was on a par but from my research at the time, the Pullmans were an easy step up in quality compared to others I could locate at the time, so thats where my money went. I have never regretted it.... 8-)

                            Mal.

                              Ha!
Greg: enuff said, you had me at Ha! Hope to get a Pullman by xmas this year, pingusam has kindly sent me his rosewood handle one so at least I can tamper better than the plastic crap that came with the silvia.

The wife went to Simon Johnson for lunch yesterday and they were selling tampers for $130, I told her I could get a much better one for $100! I think Im wearing her down slowly, making her realize that a Pullman isnt actually *that* expensive

Need to plan out my magically appearing Pullman tamper hahah shhh..
