  • Detoxing the Gaggia Classic

Have had my Classic for about a month now and pull about 6-10 doubles through it a day.
Aside from the usual clean of the tray, wand, water tank etc. is there anything else I should be doing regularly?

I have read about some Silvia owners "backflushing" to keep them clean. Can you do this with the Classic?

Any other Classic owners out there or others in the know that can give me some tips on keeping her insides clean?   :

    Thanks,
    forcoffee

If they are maybe the topic should be "detoxing forcoffee" ;D

That would be some serious consumption.

Good to hear it has been a good month with the new equipment. I have not had my machine very long either. I think i am starting to produce a bulge from all the full cream milk. Tried low fat but just not for me. I think I will have to take up excercising so I can still have full cream. Or maybe just have more straight espresso instead of Latte.
I am not in the know when it comes to the Gaggia so sorry I cant help you out in regards to back flushing. Someone will point you in the right direction though. Have seen other Gaggia owners about.

My goodness man, 3-4 doubles! Thats like 7-8 normal espressos. Do you get any sleep 8-)

Ive had my Gaggia Coffee Deluxe for about 2 months now...cant backflush this machine as it does not have the 3 way solenoid valve thingy like the Classic does so cant help there.

I take the shower screen off every 3-4 weeks and wash it with warm soapy water and give the group head a good clean while its off. I generally clean the group head daily as I make about 1-2 espressos a day.

Ive read you should decalcify your machine every 6 months especially with the Gaggias due to them having aluminum boilers that are more prone to build up than stainless steel/brass boilers.
Ive got this down on my maintenance calendar. Sounds like a bit of a chore, but if you keep up the 3-4 double espressos, you might not notice it ;-)

Enjoy your machine. The Gaggias are great.

                Yep,

You sure can.... And welcome to CoffeeSnobs by the way ;D. Heres a link to a site about the process of back-flushing, including the why, how and where for at thous . It focuses on a Silvia specifically but the process is the same and can be applied to most 3-Way Valve machines.

You might have to peruse through the warranty statement for your machine though as some machine manufacturers will void the warranty if back-flushing is undertaken (including the Silvia :-? strangely enough). So, I guess it is up to you whether you want to do it or not.... Personally, with my previous machine, a Mokita, I back-flushed it from day one with water daily and Espresso Clean from weekly to fortnightly. This meant that maintaining a clean Group, shower-screen, water dispersion nut and 3-Way Valve was a piece of cake and never a chore, Plus...... Resulting brews were never contaminated by old coffee grounds and oil residues, etc.

                All the best,
                Mal.

With that much coffee in you I dont think the daisies will be growing anyway. That is some serious amounts of coffee no wonder you have such a serious roaster.

I am not sure what "CP" is but your health is starting to worry me :-/ Just sounds a lot to me that is all. But whatever works for you is what matters at the end of the day. I do know a cafe owner who gets up in the middle of the night just to have a coffee and than go back to bed. And that is for stale coffee imagine what he would be prepared to do for fresh coffee if he gets the chance to taste it.

Sorry for the diversion there forcoffee. Are you queries on cleaning answered now?

CP is Cold Process coffee. It may sound horrible but as some converts on here can attest to its a wonderful cup.

You can find more information on CP in these discussions of it:
