    hahahha no John,

We live here in Australia..... But we do not live in Town, We have a nice little block of land and we supply every drop of our own precious water... We actually have a good laugh when we hear of City people having to restrict their water usage and only water on every second day and only with a hand held hose... Weve been doing that for 20+years and as for user pays... We have to pump the water ourselves and that has been going on here for the same time..... lol

Water to us has never been taken for granted, But If I had to compare water here compared to Home (France) Australia wins Hands and feet down the flavour of our water wether it be in Adelade, Melbourne, Brisbane Sydney or where I live tastes much better... Our little home town of Serres in France is up in the Rhone Alps but still the water is not as good.

    Cheers

My comment about tank water, I said, "However, FB, TANK WATER, is not recommended for espresso machines. Usually it has a low level of conductivity".
In some cases it usually has a low level of conductivity. Obviously this will vary from area to area. My comment was directed to those on tank water, to be mindful, that it could raise some issues. If youre happy with your tank water, then it is not an issue.
Often this type of water could be a bit more corrosive. Bottom line is, you can either have your water tested or if and when you start to see signs of corrosion, you take some action.

Ours is 6.5 =/- as for copper pipes, Our house had new copper pipes installed in 1956 and I had to cut a line a while back to add a new tap and there was no sign of any corrosion.

Rain water is and always has been much nicer, at least around here. I have always enjoyed a cuppa from Fresh water over the rot you get from cities etc.

You could go on all day and argue the pros and cons about what is best but in the end it all comes down to personal choice... But H20 isnt always H2O

    re tank water

John, as I understand it low conductivity is only an issue for machines with autolevel sensors typically found in commercial espresso machines but not in machines like Silvia, most Gaggias etc. Even my non auto Cimbali has no water levelsensor (might be why it needed a new element) .

I knew distilled water could be a problem but wasnt aware that tank water had the same issue, probably depends on how rusty your tank is

My tank water has a ph of about 6.6 which is pretty neutral, it can easily be tested a cheap kit from a swimming pool or pet shop. Once again I imagine this will vary depending on roof, tank construction and probably most importantly your local environment, eg acid rain in industrial/high density areas.

I tend to agree about the trouble finding a decent drop of H2O and in turn a decent espresso.
As the major component of an espresso is water, it should make sense that to get the best tasting esresso then you need to have the best tasting H2O going into the machine.

Water has been discussed in another topic, earlier.

However, FB, TANK WATER, is not recommended for espresso machines. Usually it has a low level of conductivity. This can cause problems with the readings from the water-level probe. Also, due to the low TDS levels, this type of water could be corrosive and corrode any copper or brass parts, it comes into contact with. Calcite can be added to tank water to raise the pH and conductivity levels.

We have a spring here on our property that comes up through the ground and then through a heap of Moss(Natural Filtration) after running through the moss for about 20-30ft it trickles down a little channel, although the output is only small, I must admit to looking forward to going down there to fence and getting a drink, the flavour too is earthy and very crisp and cold even on a hot day, We quite often bottle a bit and have it in glass bottles in our Refridgerator and a lot of people ask where do you get this mineral water from..... I fully agree with what you are all saying, there is so much rotten water around that getting a nice one is really a bit of luxury that everyone should experience in their lives, after all water is vital to our well being.

Even having Tank water is a basic requirement, Only problem is what the birds leave in the gutters, but a good Flush unit for your tank fixes that problem.

Im actually quite a fan of Coopers Pale Ale. That comes straight out of the river doesnt it?
Breweries have millions of dollars invested in water treatment. They can pretty much take out and put into water whatever they please.

What comes from the river and what winds up in the bottle are two totally different things.

Shouldnt think that anybody who drank untreated SA water would live to tell the tale. Theres a nickname for Coopers SA amongst Croweaters ... its fondly referred to as Coop Soup. Must admit that I like it though. :P

I think they put just enough alcohol in it to kill the germs!
I agree Coopers PA is one of the best.

Toorak has extra-special bulls**t filters :-)...hence the clean water there.

    Hi All,

Actually, our water here in Warwick SE QLD is pretty good... not too hard and has a very sweet and sometimes earthy taste. It originates from a permanent spring that was dammed by our forefathers and to this day still provides enough water for our end of town.

Use a Brita Filter Jug to catch anything that shouldnt be there and feed this to my Mokita. Up til now, coffee from Mokita always tastes really good and Im sure that our water contributes in no small way towards this.

    Cheers,
    Dimal.

Re: What Coffee Equipment do you all have?

Christchurch water is Filtered by 100k of shingle (Canterbury Plains) and NOTHING is added to it nor is it filtered by man.

Tastes much better than the water in Melbourne or Geelong. Sydney water is Vile. Ballarat water is awful to boot. All these places in Ausie claim to have the best water in the world IMHO all lies put out by the marketing devisions of water companies and councils.

out of all the places I have tried the tap water Christchurch water wins hands down. so far all the tap water ive tried here in Ausie tastes like swamp water.

    Cheers
    Rich
