    Re: Couple of Tamper Questions

    Thanks for that Greg,
I will assume that the slightly rounded corner at the bottom outer edge would make it less effective as well.

      Re: Couple of Tamper Questions

If its only a small radius I wouldnt be too worried about it. People use convex tampers which essentially have one massive radius. Its probably more important to minimise the clearance between the tamper and basket wall so all of the puck gets tamped rather than leaving an untamped rim.

I guess it really comes down to: For factory tampers you could do a lot worse than a SB unit; for aftermarket ones you could do a lot better.

        Decision made and acted upon

Just ordered a Pullman Barista tamper plus a Synesso basket.

Thanks to all who pointed me in the right direction and thanks to Greg for his patient and wise counsel

          Hey Rusty,
Keep me posted on the improvement (or not) if you wouldnt mind as Ive been thinking about doing this myself.
          Thanks.

            Hi Todd,

I mentioned in another thread that I used the single basket for the first time this morning and the shot was better than Ive had from the double. I measured the capacity of both baskets and found the single held a lot more pro rata than the double. I figured this meant I updosed more in the single and that gave a better shot.

The Synesso holds more than the Sunbeam so Im looking for the same improvement there plus whatever a better tamper contributes ;D

              Re: Couple of Tamper Questions

From your comments Im presuming youre using the single basket for a single cup of coffee, and the double basket for two cups of coffee. Youre correct that single baskets normally hold more than half a double, and if youre using the baskets this way youre extracting the shot from a larger volume of coffee per cup. This typically give you a richer, sweeter and less bitter shot. However youll get even better results again by ditching the single basket altogether and using the double basket exclusively. Most folk round here do that and find by extracting the same amount of espresso out of a larger amount of coffee you get a much richer, sweeter and less bitter shot.

Single baskets also have some inherent design problems for which theyre often avoided - have a read through http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1169781510/ if you want more info on that.

So the larger dose seems to be the clue.

Except for this morning when my wife was out I always pull doubles. I have updosed as much as possible with the SB basket so Im looking forward to the slightly larger Synesso improving my shots, not to mention a certain Barista tamper

                  Hi Todd,

The Pullman Barista plus Synesso basket are the best investment Ive made in accessories ;D

Improved coffee - easier tamping and a joy to use.

                  Go for it Todd
