Re: Pullman Barista Handles - Matte or Glossy?

We do say that the photos on the website are only a guide, mainly because as you say individuals monitor settings can be all over the place and obviously out of our control. Each batch of handles can appear slightly different and we dont update the website photos in those cases, but when theyre more noticeably different we do reshoot.

Im hoping to get the photos on the website updated in the next few days with the matte ones; if it was a 5 minute job Id have done it earlier but by the time all the equipment and lighting is set up, kids out the way, photos are shot, processed, resized and uploaded you can kiss goodbye to several hours easily. So while its important the unfortunate reality is that its not the sort of thing that can be done in five minute snatches of idle time, so sometimes has to wait a bit longer than Id like.

    Heres the current grape...

Cant believe I only just spotted this thread!

Dont know if Im too late but Im with the group consensus which is matte for colours, (not too fussed about either black, really, but if I had to choose, Id go gloss).

I much prefer the brighter finish as the colours are, like you said Greg, more saturated and Im a fan of the deeper colour. The gloss looks a bit christmas decoration-ey, maybe a tad too shiny?

Like Greg W, Id like to see them in grape too! (Good choice Greg W!)

Would I be correct in saying that the current Baristas on sale are the matt finish? With all due respect, and being completely honest, I think the pictures of the Barista handle on the website appear quite glossy (esp the ones on the white background) though I know this varies from computer to computer. I personally wouldnt select the grape handle from the website, but I like the look of it from CSers pictures on this site - it just looks more matt in the pictures here.

I can see Greg Ps point about offering too many options. Perhaps a way around this is to keep x of the less preferred (at this stage glossy handles) around and then the select crowd who know about them can request them if they wish (like a special edition).

Hope that helps, they are all lovely pieces of art.

anything that does not show up fingermarks is better in my books... i would go for matte in all colours.
love the colours, by the way, Greg.
    cheers,

looking at the picture again I think the matte black looks very classy next to the gloss black poser.
the pullman logo stands out better and I think it would look great on the complete tamper as the matte finish would look similar to the finish on the rubber top of the base.

seems no one else does, but I really like the look of the matte Black one. I was tossing up between the Acetal and the stealth black when I got mine, because I liked the matte look of the Acetal.
If matte Black Anodized Aluminium was available when I ordered I would have chosen it.

I do prefer the black in the shiny
That one caught my eye yesterday; standing out from the rest to me.

    Yup.

I like both and, being a typical woman, cant decide! I do prefer the black in the shiny, definitely, though. All the rest are neck and neck for me, although the practicality of the matt finish for me would end up winning it

Is there any difference when it comes down to grippability / slippability, Greg? Probably seems like a silly question, but with my hand being smaller, I tend to grip my Pullman around the edges of the top bulp, rather than have the very top in the palm of my hand (it ends up being more over towards the the pad of my hand closest to my little finger). Actually, the more I think of it, it probably is a silly question, because I balance my fingers around the base, but Ill leave the question there just in case.

Greg, I think you could make a beautiful Christmas card or Logo out of the red, green and black ones (sorry, just my creative side coming out...)

though of course having all those colours available gives them a fair bit of appeal to some home users too.
Wouldnt it be a boring word if we all had the same tastes?

Must admit overall I much prefer the look and feel of the hard wood handles.
I understand the logic of metal and cleanliness in a commercial situation, but after 8 years of home use my hardwood handle still looks and feels as good as new, in fact better than new its taken on a very nice patina through constant use, may well be an heirloom. Wink
Agree with your logic there Jon W, same reason why the Deluxes only ever had wooden handles. Building a commercial tamper I had to provide a more robust alternative that could take the sort of punishment I had in mind, though of course having all those colours available gives them a fair bit of appeal to some home users too.

@caffeol - yeah just mention in checkout youd like a matte Burgundy handle and well use that for your order as we have both at the moment. Dont sit on your hands though - at this time of year and with longer than normal freight times things are taking longer to get to people.

I guess one option to nail this would be to perhaps send a few over to a BB pickup
An alternate option would be to send a couple to my house

Failing that, I vote for the matte finish  8-)
Well I must admit I did consider a travelling roadshow sort of idea but the freight side of it could be tricky - including a pile of pre-paid mailing bags could work but thered likely be others whod want to be in once the tour started.

    Greg

I really like the matte red. I have been dropping hints around the house about Christmas. Would it be possible to order the matte finish and be prepared to wait for delivery?

Of course what I really want is a checkerboard handle with a bismuth insert to produce a balanced tamper.

I agree completely! My Pullman tamper with its hardwood handle just gets classier and more beautiful with age. Kinda like my wife, who turns 19 in February.... 19 Stone that is..... Heheheheehee hope she doesnt read this.... ;D

Re: Pullman Barista Handles - Matte or Glossy?

Thanks for the feedback guys, seems to be a reasonable consensus there. Ideally Id like to use the same finish for all handles but that may not be the best overall solution.

@mono - The anodising is the same strength regardless of whether its a matte or gloss finish. Reflective surfaces are more inclined to show scratches and dents that matte ones, but matte surfaces can tend to show glossy substances like grease more than a glossy surface.

@robstar - no the anodising is quite hard, and gloss or matte would both wear away at the same rate (which is very slow!). Some of the gloss Burgundy handles look really nice in the metal, almost like the wet look of a highly polished car, but at the same time I think matte does exude a more subdued classiness than a more out-there glossy appearance.

@kk - thats actually my preference too. The image below is from the first run of Barista handles we had done which is basically what Im wanting to get, though of course I wouldnt be selling them in their current form if I wasnt sufficiently happy with them. For reasons beyond my control the manufacturing process has had to change which is giving the aluminium a shinier surface pre-anodising.

    Greg
