Re: Silvia single filter basket, and other questio

i just acquired an espro tamper from veneziano and found it useful to gauge how much i should tamp. its quite a great help for a n00b like me

definitely agree that it does remove one variable from the equation and lets you attend to your dose/grind/water temp/etc.

Veneziano is the importer of the Espro tamper and it can be obtained from Coffeeparts as well. Greg P makes a pretty mean tamper too! 8-)

I think Di Bartoli sells the Espro. That was what I was looking at.

I bought a larger single basket in place of the rancilio single. I got it from The Coffee Company on Carlisle st, Balaclava. $9 from memory.

Produced great shots. But I second what Robster said about getting your dosing right. Silvia is very picky on the single basket.

If you have the standard single basket that I had with my silvia, I would be surprised if it was even worth bothering with. I brought mine out every now and then and could never really get a decent shot out of it ... I think that it must have held like 5g. My favourite single basket came from an old gaggia classic and held more like 10g. It makes gorgeous shots on the synesso.

You will probably find that the single basket requires a different grind from the double. This is a very good reason to pick one and not bother with the other. Have you got a grinder yet? What volume/time are you getting for your cremaless singles?

Convex tampers seem to be a lot more popular amongst the pro baristi ... so much so that when a bunch of us were trying out Greg Pullmans tampers the number 1 comment on the feedback sheet was "convex, please!" However, Greg himself ran a poll not too long ago and coffeesnobs seem to prefer flat bases. I wonder how much of that is because Gregs tampers were only available with flat bases until recently!

A few years ago I was lucky enough to be invited to Hazel de los Reyes roastery in Marrickville and she let me play around with the Espro tamper. It exerts some resistance until the part where you rest your fingers comes in contact with the base, at which point you know that you have reached 30lb (or 150 newton or whatever) of force, so you just lift the tamper up and thats that. I thought that it was so well made that I convinced Veneziano to import it at the beginning of this year and they have been selling like hotcakes to the more hardcore cafes because they can eliminate a variable between staff members. I always use mine at home when I am dialling in a new blend and alternate between it and my coffeelab tamper thereafter. So needless to say that I think the espro is pretty good. A new Australian tamper with a spring in it that is cheaper came onto the market recently and I got to use one ... suffice to say that if you are considering buying either of these, you really should try them both out next to each other and decide which one is best!

    Hope that helps,

    Luca

I am getting faster pours too. Typically 15 secs. Tried harder tamping, but I only just got the machine, so I am a real newbie. Might get a better fitting tamper too.

Should I get flat or convex?

    Hi Paul,

I use a single basket with my Silvia, but not the one that came with the machine. I have one that is slightly deeper and it produces great single shots. The Silvia doesnt allow much of an error margin in dosing. This is even more true of dosing single as opposed to doubles. The stock standard Silvia single basket is even more finicky, so I dont use it any more.

If youre getting a well timed pour but no crema, Id have a look at what beans youre using.

    Cheers,

    Rob

Silvia single filter basket, and other questions

Does anyone use the Silvias single filter basket - and get decent crema? I cant seem to.

Also, I thought that a single shot is meant to use 7g of dry ground coffee, however I can easily load the single basket with 10g - but still not get good crema! Any advice on how much coffee to load would be appreciated (or a pointer to a thread dealing with this).

Anyone have any experiance with spring loaded tampers? Renzo at Di Bartolis has such a device and it looks super kewl. The handle has an internal spring and as you press down, it loads up to the preset tamping pressure then releases, bit like a spring loaded centre punch. It is mighty expensive but I was wondering if any of you snobs had used one?
