Re: Gaggia Classic brewing group and hot water pro
Hi Aleph,
I recently had a similar problem with my Silvia after I had been descaling the boiler.
Some scale had got into the 3 way valve and it was not working properly.
Ive come to appreciate her more now, as following the above mentioned procedure is relatively easy, you can disassemble the 3 way valve assembly, clean it out and re-assemble easily in about 30 minutes (allowing a good bit of time to soak the components in espresso machine cleaner so they are clean).
Regarding the boilers in the classic, another CS member (cant remember who now) mentioned some time ago that while they do corrode realtively quickly, he wasnt concerned because the boiler is relatively cheap to replace, if I remember correctly, might be worth checking on this if you have an ongoing scale problem.
Regards
Bullitt

Re: Gaggia Classic brewing group and hot water pro
That depends :-/Originally posted by aleph link=1165751239/0#6 date=1165755603thank you for this hint. So cleaning the 3-way is just by using some cleaning solution with blank filter and backflushing it, correct?
If it is some coffee residue or something which can be dislodged easily - yes that should work.
If it is a fragment of corroded aluminium which has become jammed in the valve - nope a disassembly will be required.
See:

This is for a silvia but the same principle applies to all 3 way valves.
On one well known site here in Aust there is a comment that the classic makes great espresso but, because of the corrosion problem, you should buy it new and sell it on Evilbay after 2 years (before the problems start to occur....)
Having two dissimilar metals in a boiler results in faster corrosion of the more "active" which is the aluminium.

Re: Gaggia Classic brewing group and hot water pro
aleph
Welcome to CS
As Coffee Kid said above....
The three way valve has 3 actions (funny that)....
At rest it stops all water from the pump getting to the group....
When it is activated it lets the water from the pump flow out of the group...
When it is deactivated it stops the flow of water to the group instantly and also opens the path to the drain pipe and lets all the water in the group drain away...
So if there is a bit of debris in the valve preventing it closing fully..... water will continue to flow from the group when the pump is running and not all water will be drained from the group above the puck.....
Sounds like you might have to clean the three way again.
By the way how old is the Classic?.... the boiler in these is a combination of brass (good) and aluminium (not so good). The aluminium corrodes fairly quickly and causes problems after a few years...... maybe a bit of corrosion has come loose and lodged in the 3 way :-[

Re: Gaggia Classic brewing group and hot water pro
but when I lock the group with a blind filter, turn the pomp ON and OFF there is a flush from 3-way valve, so it seems not to be stucked. However the excess of water from above the coffe "cake" in the portafiler is not sucked down the 3-way valve.

Gaggia Classic brewing group and hot water problem
Hi mates,
Ive got a problem with my Classic just after backflushing it. Once when I start the pumpo the water flows normally from the group but when I open the steam valve and the water goes through the steaming wand it (the water) does not stop flowing from the group.
It happened just today morning and yesterday evening Ive was backflushing it and setting the OPV, but yesterday everything was ok.
Any ideas? Thanks a lot!Tags: None
