Re: Shower screens and baskets..
While those items are made of hardy stainless steel, there are other parts which arent, and do need periodic replacement. Most notably, the gasket on the group head into which the portafilter seals. These become very hard and worn with time, and will not seal properly.

Steven,Originally posted by poddy66 link=1166178268/0#1 date=1166181912i am new to making coffee what is a shower screen pleae explain cheers steven
In the group head, immediately above where the coffee puck sits in the basket is a screen with small holes it it. As the water passes through the group this disperses the water across the top of the puck so it, in effect, showers the water (in small droplets) onto the coffee rather than having it come out in a gusher and disturb the surface of the puck....
Its a bit like the difference between using a jet on your hose or a shower head when watering small plants..... the jet will wash them away!
And regarding replacement..... with all the machines Ive had (assuming they are regularly maintained - and you dont overfill the basket so you damage the screen) Ive never had to replace one.
And again with regular maintenance, (soaking in coffee machine backflush detergent) Ive never had to replace a basket either.

Shower screens and baskets..
I know that routine maintenance of any machine is crucial in ensuring optimum performance....
So with this in mind, do items such as filter baskets and shower screens wear out?
How do you tell?
Should they be replaced periodically?Tags: None
