Rancilio commercials of that age are well known in the coffee trade as being absolute coffee burners and run too hot. We have no time for them and wont waste time trying to mod them although if you want to do so on an "at home project" basis, thats ok.

They are very solidly built but that and percieved cheapness is not a substitute for being able to produce quality coffee and having a mammoth on your kitchen bench eating up space and power.

They are heavy "on the juice" ie it will probably be a 20 amper.

Proceed with caution or not at all, at risk of repeating myself these were not known in the trade for being a great coffee machine from point of view of quality production and were the bane of coffee companies where the machines owners and operators would blame coffee beans where fthe fault lay with their own choice of "vehicle" to work with and their own lack of coffee making expertise.

    Regardz,
    FC.

Rancilios are good machines. Coffeeparts should stock most parts to get it repaired and running again. Get the model number and ring Pedro and ask him.

However, some Rancilios are known to run hot. A coffee tech I know reckons they can easily be modded to run cooler (by restricting the thermosyphon flow a bit). He does this mod to the Rancilios that come through his shop.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

    OK,

First question.... Does that particular model feature on the CoffeeParts spares list..... their spares prices are very good as is the range of spares they keep.... and this can save you heaps as you will need some spares over time.

Has the machine been used on softened water (all its life). If not the boiler will have a lot of scale build up.... and should be opened and descaled - dont try to descale it in place like you would with a domestic machine.

Has the machine been stored full of water or empty.... if empty then the scale dries out and pieces will come loose..... making stripping even more essential.

Is it configured for three phase power or single phase - they can be easily converted - if you can find the info..... and the current drawn by the Rancillio isnt has high and many commercial 2 groups.

Dont worry about the group seals etc.... assume they will need to be replaced!

Make sure steam valves turn fairly smoothly etc.... if not they can be repaired for not a lot of dollars.....

Have a look "under the bonnet" - dont be shocked if you find lots of coffee grinds and coffee oil - but other than that, does the cabling look to be in good condition, are the fittings on the brass pipe joints (especially around the 3 way valves) in good condition - i.e. havent been butchered by some repair person using pliers rather than an spanner (indication of quality of maintenance)... generally look for signs where water has leaked and caused corrosion etc.

Check that the shower screens can be removed... and behind the screen looks clean - again goes to quality of operator maintenance..

Thats probably about the best you can do without firing it up.... No way to check the pump unfortunately.... and thats one of the most expensive bits!

Good luck.... and if you buy it, report back and Ill give you some tips on what you should do before the first shot is poured.

And by the way, 10 years isnt old- my machine is 17 years young..... and will do another 17 years - even more - I have no doubt!

    Hi Jono,

Firstly, before offering any suggestions, can you see it running - or is it only possible to give it a visual inspection on the bench - no power or water.

    OLD Rancilio 2 group Commercial

Ive seen an OLD(10Y?) Rancilio 2 group machine for about $400 they say it works well and it looks to be in good condition. If I was to use it at home besides plumbing and power what should I look out for?

    Thanks anyone with info!
