Weve got the same (or very very similar anyway) scales as sean, great little scales, we call them our drug scales as you can get such small quatities ;D
I do tend to go on the level in the kyocera but in saying that some beans have a different weight depending on how Ive roasted them, so back to the scales
Ill have to try the beans in the basket and see what happens too.
Thanks for some interesting comments. Im interested that some people are using their baskets as a measuring device. This is a question worth some scientific testing: IF unground beans filled the same volume as the same beans that have been ground, then using the basket would be an ideal measuring device, especially as I have four baskets that are used depending on who wants what strength shot - a single Silvia, a double Silvia, a double Synesso and a triple Silvia. I know scales would be the most accurate, but its another device to have on the kitchen bench, and testing would be needed to know exactly what weight is ideal for which basket. These figures of course would probably change depending on kind of beans being used. I like to try different ones and there seems to be variations in dose needed according to beans. My mission at present is to avoid sweeping off too much ground coffee and to avoid having to put a few more beans into Rocky if I did not dose enough. There must be a simpler way. By the way, Im very happy with my shots, Im just trying to avoid waste and/or extra steps in the process. As a relative newbie, Im learning that consistency in technique is paramount.

The volume of ground beans is different to the volume of unground beans.
The point is that I can gauge by the level of unground beans what becomes the correct volume when ground.
Lets say that the unground beans reach the lip of the basket. Ground they dont reach that far.
This topic has seen me pull out the scales to see if that is practical for me.
Time-wise there doesnt seem to be much difference but as Richard A said, its one more device to have on the bench.
Using the scales has been interesting though, as at one point I adjusted the grinder a bit fine so instead of going courser on the grind I decided to use the scales to use less beans for the next shot.
As the beans aged, instead of grinding finer, I added more beans.
This will only work so far though as eventually Ill be overdosing and so have to grind finer instead.
I think Im becoming persuaded that I should get some digital scales. True, there may not be a need to use them all the time, but I need to have a picture in my mind of what a 21gram pile of beans look like versus a 18gram pile etc. Whether I use an actual scoop or basket may not be that important provided I use the same device consistently and know within a few beans how much to put into each different basket. Jaycar Electronics have a pocket-size one that measures up to 100gm for $49 and they are close to where I live (pictured). Id rather just get one locally than ship one in from O/S. Does anyone know of another local source?

The bay of evil was where mine came from at about $30 posted from Melbourne.
100g ones are great for checking bean load weights and when I am using an electric grinder at home for a single brew I tend to use them each time to save wastage or having to add a few more beans later. If I was doing it again i would consider getting a set of 1000g (0.1g) ones for measuring brew water and finished weights for pourover coffees :
Heres one for the "you got to see it to believe it" file. Im sitting here with a lovely single shot cap, after having used the single basket slightly heaped with beans as a measuring scoop. I had to level off excess ground beans before tamping! I honestly would not have believed that unground beans ended up so close to the volume of ground beans! What the...
For the record Im using a single source Brazilian from Bellaroma, ground on 9th Feb and opened two days ago. Rocky is set to 7.
Next time Ill use whatever basket I need leveled off with unground beans as my measuring standard and see how it goes.
Ive bought a couple of different sets of scales from this mob over the years. They are a very helpful and decent outfit and I have no problem recommending them to anyone.... 8-)
