My feeling is to take the machine which has done a few years mileage to a place who sells the Gaggias, like Espresso Italia for example, who are just north of the river who should do a comprehensive check and service, then thereafter its a matter of backflushing with a decent detergent like Cafetto regularly like once a week.
Ask for advice from the service center how often you should de-scale your machine, it depends on how much you use your machine and water quality in your area, if youre using a water filter etc.
As routine, i would recommend giving the group head a flush and quick scrub with a head cleaning brush after each coffee making session.
This helps rid of any loose grounds that may be left on the shower screen and the seal, to maintain the quality of your coffee.
All the best.
