  • Pullman Barista Tamper owners poll

Its been three years since the Barista was released and much research went into its initial design; but now its been out there for a while Im interested in learning a bit about how people are actually using them.

The Barista as youd know comes with three spacers, the larger two of which have contoured sides, which are therefore designed to be used one at a time, rather than stacked to maintain optimum ergonomics. I know that some users do in fact use more than one at the same time to achieve a taller tamper.

So my initial question relates to the configuration of your spacers. But if you have any other general feedback Id be more than happy to hear it!

Only 12 votes so far? (4 of which are "just nosey") where are the Pullman Barista users?

None for me - having short fingers means that if I have any spacers in, i cant cup it in my palm properly. The only downside is that it looks a bit unfinished going from black to the burgundy, but I think Im probably in the minority with no spacers so its not worth adapting.

Id still love a true purple one, one day! 8-)

I have a large hand and use the 5mm as I can have the handle in the middle of the palm and fingers on the rubber neck. This allows me to be precise with the pressure. So far very happy with the Barista, it sits alongside the Delux Tamper which stills gets used occassionally

you mean as opposed to Grape?

if you want a specific colour we can always look into it as a one off... We did an aqua one for Fiefys new shop when she first opened.

None. I should try them out and get a feel for whats best. You fit them so the tamper fits your fist?

Re: Pullman Barista Tamper owners poll

It depends entirely on your grip. The most common grip is the thumb down the side of the handle and onto the rubber but there are other grips out there so its best to try the different spacers and see which one gives you a comfortable grip.

Re: Pullman Barista Tamper owners poll

Im a big fan of the Barista Greg, particularly the rubber insert compared to somehting like a RB with a metal base - dont know how full time baristas could live without it!

The only part of the design I dont use or like is the truetamp rings. They might be of use for a beginner learning to dose and tamp but I find they are a nuisance when fine grinds get caught in them causing the tamper to jam in the basket.

One small complaint for an otherwise perfect product! 8-)

Its funny you say that because I havent had the tamper jam in a basket for years, but it did happen when I was first starting out. :-?

Re: Pullman Barista Tamper owners poll

Interesting... lots of people like them but I know there are a few who dont and I guess there will always be different opinions. I dont use them routinely but I find them useful for checking now and then if its level.

Theoretically theres more chance of grinds lodging on an uneven surface than a smooth one but generally speaking the shape of the grooves means grounds dont get a good grip. I dont suppose the tampers moist at all is it? If not a quick wipe between tamps should help; even smooth-faced tampers sometimes have a few grounds that stick so a wipe can be in order anyway, rings or no rings.

Re: Pullman Barista Tamper owners poll

I find that I have my finger tips overhanging the edge of the tamper and resting on the basket edge, as I twist I can tell if I am not level.

I have had grinds stick in a spot or two in the grooves on the odd occasion, but its always been when I havent distributed nicely and excess grounds were present near the edge. If it does happen, a quick wipe with a finger and they are all gone and all is good.

Really love the tamper, and especially the silver semi gloss finish on mine, which looks quite like polished alloy (was from scratch and dent pile - so its very unique [smiley=smiley.gif]). I noticed a post recently by Greg saying they will be making a limited run of polished alloy handles:

BTW, thats my handsome tamper in that pic! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Love the truetamp rings. I use the 5mm spacer for aesthetic reasons!

Tried each spacer for 7 - 10 days each and settled on the 5mm. Very happy with it in combo with the VST 18 basket.
